@snowy Damn, over a $100 a month? That sucks. I only pay $39 (I always renegotiate with Telstra as I have my Fox through them, when they do a deal for new customers and get the same price, no multiroom but don't need it) but I only get sports, no movies, doco channels, or prestige TV etc.

Therein lies the problem. If you want sports you have to buy the basic package.

Sky also do deals for new customers - existing customers can get fucked apparently. Hence my hatred for them - also a necessary evil for me. Rocks and hard places are a regular spot for me with Sky.

Basic has been split up now, so you can get starter for $25 and sport for I think $29.95. So that’s as cheap as you can get (without HD) and have sports.

    It really is a ripoff.

I ditched multi-room and got Netflix.

I'd ditch sky all together but the wife says there is stuff on their (old) basic package she watches all the time.

@Bovidae Yeah I think there are big changes on the horizon, I assume Sky own the company that does the games, cant recall their name, so will they contract to TVNZ or will TVNZ do all their own broadcasting given as we have seen when watching rugby in some other countries, the TV production isn't that great, whereas sky seems pretty god at that part of thie rjob.

Sky has - and I've only just noticed it (is it new?) - sneakily made some changes.

    You now pay separately for

    • the minimum package that everyone must pay for (Sky Starter): $ 24.91
(The old Sky Basic includes both Sky Starter and Sky Entertainment: $ 49.91)
    • the packages you want to subscribe to in addition to Sky Starter. Sky Sport, for example, is $ 29.90
    • additional channels; for example, the Rugby Channel costs $ 8.81
    • Sky Box: only enables you to watch live tv (no recording): $ 0.00
    • My Sky: the ability to watch, pause, rewind and record live tv programmes, games etc.: $ 15.00
    • My Sky +: up to 4 times the recording capacity of My Sky: $20.00
    • Multi room (costs vary, depending on whether you want a Sky Box, My Sky or My Sky +, and the number you want)
    • High definition: add $ 9.99
    • Sky Watch magazine: add $ 2.66

All these prices are without GST.

I only now realise that I'm no longer just paying for my packages, but also for the ability to record with My Sky. Geez, I should look at my invoices better! They even mention on my current invoice the item "storage", whatever that means. No idea how much they charge for that. I hope it's included in the cost of My Sky.

Things seemed to have reversed with Oz.

I remember maybe 10 years back when a mate of mine moved over to Oz and we hooked up Fox while I was staying with him and it was way more expensive than my Sky package I had at home, with lots less content.

What @Stargazer has shown maybe does show they're out of touch. I think I've been swayed and I'm joining the pitch fork brigade.

@nepia What I find really annoying is that they don't specify the invoices. I'm charged for "Monthly services" and then they list Starter, Entertain (I've just asked a downgrade, dropping that one), Sport, Rugby, My Sky service, + storage and give you the total amount without GST and then separately the GST. So basically, you can't see what they're charging you for what item. I got all these amounts from their website, not from their invoice.

Originally you needed to buy the Sky box. And this was in the days before MySky with dual tuners and a HD for recording. I distinctly remember selling the box back to Sky for credit when they upgraded to newer boxes.

@stargazer think it is either $10 or $15 to add 'recording' to your multi-room, but when you get multi-room you get HD for free.

I have my Sky through Vodafone, so they give me 'MySky' free

I had to log out of the website just to see how much each thing I was subscribed to actually costs, as it doesn't say when you're logged in or on your invoice. Bloody Sky.

Edit - $25 a month for that "entertainment" package... they are taking the piss.

I think that was only in the early early early days - when we started getting Sky in the Bay (in 1994 according to Wiki, although I always thought it was earlier) you didn't need to buy your own decoder, but I remember Auckland friends buying theirs.

Also, according to wiki this new pricing structure was introduced this month to combat online content providers - seems it's having a reverse effect.

    @nepia

I remember exactly when I got Sky at my parent's house. June 1991, specifically for the 1991 NBA finals.

@nepia TBF Skys subscriber numbers have been on the decline for a couple of years now, it's just it took them that long to find a way to try and combat it rather than blaming pirating and online providers like Netflix and Lightbox

I'm pretty sure we pay close to a hundred quid for:

    • Phone line
    • Broadband
    • Basic package
    • Entertainment package
    • Basic sports
    • HD
    • Skygo on 2 devices

    So stop moaning!

@bones thats about $160, roughly what I currently pay for phone line, unlimited broadband, basic package, Skygo, not sure if this is single device or not.

Not HD, no sports, assume no entertainment package.

They might be better off just concentrating on Sport and getting rid of 'entertainment' as they will likely save a bunch not paying for that content. Netflix is going to eat all that up anyway.

Concentrate on lower costs, just sports, cheaper product, less subscribers needed.

Of course, if they get the entertainment stuff dirt cheap and their main expense is sports then this is fucked.

@Bones That seems like a good deal - especially with UK internet infrastructure. A phone line? What is that? 😉

@bones shit, rate has changed, didnt realise it had moved that far, I know my in-laws usually keep me updated as to how little they get when they visit compared with 10+ years ago

either way, if I added the options you have +$30 sports, +$10 HD +$20 entertainment (assume movies??) is $220, so about 10%
