@nepia What I find really annoying is that they don't specify the invoices. I'm charged for "Monthly services" and then they list Starter, Entertain (I've just asked a downgrade, dropping that one), Sport, Rugby, My Sky service, + storage and give you the total amount without GST and then separately the GST. So basically, you can't see what they're charging you for what item. I got all these amounts from their website, not from their invoice.

Originally you needed to buy the Sky box. And this was in the days before MySky with dual tuners and a HD for recording. I distinctly remember selling the box back to Sky for credit when they upgraded to newer boxes.

@stargazer think it is either $10 or $15 to add 'recording' to your multi-room, but when you get multi-room you get HD for free.

I have my Sky through Vodafone, so they give me 'MySky' free

I had to log out of the website just to see how much each thing I was subscribed to actually costs, as it doesn't say when you're logged in or on your invoice. Bloody Sky.

Edit - $25 a month for that "entertainment" package... they are taking the piss.

I think that was only in the early early early days - when we started getting Sky in the Bay (in 1994 according to Wiki, although I always thought it was earlier) you didn't need to buy your own decoder, but I remember Auckland friends buying theirs.

Also, according to wiki this new pricing structure was introduced this month to combat online content providers - seems it's having a reverse effect.

    @nepia

I remember exactly when I got Sky at my parent's house. June 1991, specifically for the 1991 NBA finals.

@nepia TBF Skys subscriber numbers have been on the decline for a couple of years now, it's just it took them that long to find a way to try and combat it rather than blaming pirating and online providers like Netflix and Lightbox

I'm pretty sure we pay close to a hundred quid for:

    • Phone line
    • Broadband
    • Basic package
    • Entertainment package
    • Basic sports
    • HD
    • Skygo on 2 devices

    So stop moaning!

@bones thats about $160, roughly what I currently pay for phone line, unlimited broadband, basic package, Skygo, not sure if this is single device or not.

Not HD, no sports, assume no entertainment package.

They might be better off just concentrating on Sport and getting rid of 'entertainment' as they will likely save a bunch not paying for that content. Netflix is going to eat all that up anyway.

Concentrate on lower costs, just sports, cheaper product, less subscribers needed.

Of course, if they get the entertainment stuff dirt cheap and their main expense is sports then this is fucked.

@Bones That seems like a good deal - especially with UK internet infrastructure. A phone line? What is that? 😉

@bones shit, rate has changed, didnt realise it had moved that far, I know my in-laws usually keep me updated as to how little they get when they visit compared with 10+ years ago

either way, if I added the options you have +$30 sports, +$10 HD +$20 entertainment (assume movies??) is $220, so about 10%

    I pay:
Foxtel - $39 (special deal for 12 months) HD (can't watch SD anymore).
    Internet - $59 (1TB at 50/20)
Mobile (don't have landline) - $15 unlimited calling.

So over $100 all up. Plus Netflix but share that with a mate.

@nepia Sky is ridiculous. The house I bought came with a satellite dish, I bought a box from Amazon for £15 which gets 480 channels (of which 180 HD) for free, almost everything you'd ever want to watch. Also have Netflix (£8 /month) and Amazon Video (£70/year). I've heard one can free stream most of the sport one wants to watch online at various places. Fast-ish (25 Mbps) broadband is £35 /month with BT (unlimited data), and I live in pretty remote rural England (Hertfordshire). Don't have a landline.

Not paying for Sky saves enough cash for a flight back to NZ each year.
