<p>Part of a great team with Denny Hulme and Bruce MacLaren. <p>A mate of mine used to deliver petrol out to his farm and he had no idea who he was, one day he mentioned something about racing and Amon said he'd done a bit himself and took him into his house and showed him the photos and trophies etc. Needless to say he was blown away. Legend</p> -

<p>I was mad in to motor racing when i was a young fulla, and even i know bugger all about him other than he was a formula 1 driver from the glory days.</p>

<p>By all accounts achieved the least but was probably the quickest?</p> -

<p>Not sure but a lot of it has to do with team tactics, Hulme was leading but had to let McLaren in first in that race apparently and MacLaren was far and away the most ambitious. It was a good era for motor racing in NZ , we actually had a formula one race in the 50s in Levin of all places. Because it was towards the end of the season a lot of the teams would sell their cars here to fund next season so quite a few classics ended up here.</p>
<p>There was another guy competing on the circuit that doesn't get as much attention <a data-ipb='nomediaparse' href='https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Howden_Ganley'>https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Howden_Ganley</a> he struggled to get a decent team but apparently he was from all accounts a very good driver. </p> -
<p>Was he the one who is regarded as the greatest f1 driver to have never won a f1 world championship? Or was that Denny Hulme?</p>

<p>Remember him being interviewed on Radio Sport a few years back - seemed a humble guy considering he was a motorsport superstar (most are divas).</p> -

<p>His team mate Jacky Ickx came out to race in Bathurst in the mid 70s and when he came in from qualifying told the team his falcons brakes were shot, they took the car out and the were fine -just shit compared to f1 brakes. He wrecked them during the race and Kevin Bartlett had to drive the last part of the race with no brakes , still won though.</p> -

<p>I used to have a story about Damon Hills father driving f1 back in the day, he turned up to the track late after a long night, hunted out a car with German plates parked next to it and left a copy of Scourge of the Swastika on the parcel shelf so the cars owner could see it and then went out and spent the day racing. The author said he came into the pub and saw Hill and two or three others quietly standing around a fireplace and assumed they were all having a toast to someone who died on the track that day so he walked over to see what happened . He did a rapid about turn when he realised they had placed a shotgun shell on the hearth of the fire which they had just stoked up and were playing chicken to see who would be the last one standing there as the fire built up.</p> -
