Apollo 11 launched.
Got to rate this as probably Man/Mankind's greatest achievement.
The questions for me are:
- are we heading back there?
- when?
- what will the reasons be that drive us there?
My answers currently:
- yes
- who knows
- money, as opposed to a ghlobal worldeide pisding competition that drove the first shot
Discuss.

They need to do a moon base as a test for any Mars colonisation. Having a base close like that lets rescue missions be an option.
Apparantly it's also easier to launch to Mars from the Moon.
Reasons for doing it? If we don't become a multi-planetary species, and eventually multi-solar system too, then we have end date for the human species based on the conditions of Earth and the Sun.
So it's not a choice, it's a requirement long term.
Short term, if we could mine the asteroid belt and gases of Jupiter (for example) we exponetially increase the natural resources available for use.

Apparently Trump wants a landing by 2024 now. It will involve R&D from the private sector. In other news India's unmanned mission to the moon was scrubbed right before launch
SpaceX is on target for that sort of mission for the Falcon Heavy and Starship.

@Kirwan yeah and it's 100% they've got a shitload of ideas and dev going on for launching from the moon and/or moon orbit. Really keen to hear how they'll make it more efficient by generating fuel and other expendables on the moon, rather than having to ship everything up for assembly etc. That level of set up will really free the shackles and accelerate our space exploration.

Come on guys, get creative. This could be the best "discussion over beers" thread in ages.
We need something like the moon landing to focus the human spirit. Don't listen to the naysayers who say it's a waste of money, we need aspirations

What if I let you put solar panels on the moon you blinkered fuck?
