@voodoo
Is MMA worse than Boxing, Rugby, American Football for CTE or concussions?Depends on how you measure it?
In total numbers then probably not, but in a ratio of ‘games’ to concussions then for sure.
I get what @voodoo is saying. In rugby for instance, any contact with the head is being heavily policed yet in fight sports it is cheered.
It’s not a sport that I “get” either.On a different note the Halberg ‘emerging’ award has once again gone to someone that has already emerged and is doing very well. Emerged onto their blinkered radar perhaps?

Sportsman of the year: Israel Adesanya
He gave a good speech too. Pointed out NZ's strong history in combat sports and the Halbergs history of ignoring boxers, kick boxers, mma fighters. It's largely class based gatekeeping. He did it in a way that didn't shit on other sports.
Then he thanked people like Jimmy Peau, David Tua, Ray Sefo, Joseph Parker and Eugene Bareman etc -
I don't really see the problem with a "secret" ballot. The words are so obviously an attempt to trigger people off. It's an anonymous vote, so what? Netball won, Israel won, lots of individual athletes have won. So it's not a jack up by NZ rugby after all

It’s not a sport that I “get” either.From what I have read and heard, it's the action of the brain rattling that does the damage, and hence boxing is worse than MMA where the gloves are lighter/thinner, and where the elements of wrestling/jiu jitsu and leg kicks etc. mean head hunting isn't the only way to win.
I'm curious if similar comment would have been made had Parker become a world champ.

Some would as boxing is seen by many as barbaric as well. Good point though that there are probably a chunk of people that have come to accept the 'Art' of boxing but, like me, just see trained street fighting with MMA. The big image difference for me is that you don't keep hitting someone when they are down in boxing and certainly don't use things like elbows and kness to the head.

Plus longer fights, shorter rounds, 10 counts, fights with standing 8 counts etc. Those are all things than contribute to the damage being prolonged.
Mma tends to end quicker and appear more violent. The refs generally do a very good job of protecting the fightersPersonally I enjoy boxing and mma. I hope they both co-exist for a long time. I do understand that people may have a subjective dislike of mma.
I also understand the violence complaint as long as it is applied equally to all sports. -
I prefer a quality boxing fight to MMA. But then a good MMA fight is better than a boring boxing match.
Mayweather was the reason I stopped getting PPV because his fights were all the same. Great skill sure, but shit entertainment. You generally don't get that in the big MMA fights I have watched.
It's great that a fighter is recognized at our major sporting awards though, he's achieved something amazing and deserves the recognition.

@mariner4life
MMA can be pretty dull too but Adesanya's fights have always been entertaining from start to finish.
