Speaking of the thankless task of MFAT, a couple in their 70’s from Papamoa are giving them a spray in the Bay Times because apparently they are “... so angry, disappointed, and disgusted [at] the way our government has behaved” at how long it took to get them rescued from their South American holiday in Peru.
Anyone that thinks it’s as simple as chartering a flight at the moment beggars belief.
I think I discussed on one of these threads friends of mine's parents who have along with their friends ignoring the lockdown to have food and drinks together ... they all live in Papamoa.

Nuke Papamoa from orbit. It's the only way to be sure

Yeah they're behaving as if Peru were the US, or Japan, or the UK. Hello, you're in fucking Peru.

@shark The same for the Kiwis in India. A huge country with limited internal transportation options now and they probably expect a charter plane to stop at every major city to pick them up.
I never realised so many people in my neighbourhood had a dog. You get to know the regulars that walk past and most of the people I see now aren't them.

hope there isnt anything in the fact our daily update is delayed...possibly a few more deaths?
-
No, but no live announcement.
There are 13 new cases of coronavirus, the Ministry of Health has confirmed.
That brings the total number of cases to 1422.
The new cases today are made up of 8 confirmed and 5 probable.
The total number of fatalities stands at 11, after the deaths of two more patients which were announced on Friday.
-
How did they know about this guy so fast? Obviously not fast enough to eliminate potential transmission

Quite surprised at the result on the stuff poll around whether or not we should move to L3 or stay at L4.
Quite the majority to stay at L4.
I think by Thursday, with the right controls, we should move to L3
Most likely as the government message has been if we don’t as many as 80,000 people will die, and the media haven very supportive of the full lockdown.
I suspect in a few months, of if they had phrased the question more like do you support L4 continuing even if you will lose your job, you’ll see a different result.
Or if I’m wrong, then there is a distinct lack of empathy in NZ these days. As if it doesn’t effect me then fuck small businesses?

Wonder how many folks think another couple of weeks at 4 might mean a swifter level 2 or lower status? I'd rather we started seeing the impact and working out the kinks of level 3 asap and hopefully hit a 2.5 or even 2 in May. A big thing for me is how many clusters would have to pop up to bump us back to 4. That's somewhat scary imo.

I can't believe anyone thinks we should stay at L4. We have hardly any cases, almost no deaths, and we are fucking the economy every day we stay like this .
I'm not debating the decision to go into lockdown initially , but IMO we should be in L3 already and moving swiftly to L2.
The border can stay shut until on the spot testing arrives it people can quarantine for as long as it takes, but domestically we should be up and firing.

There’s one possible reason why staying at 4 could make sense.
There is a public holiday next Monday. Going to 3 for 2 days before a “long weekend” could create a difficult situation to manage.
There isn’t a lot of difference for the economy in firing up a bit of online ordering for non essentials for two days.
Of course the payback would have to be a serious look at jumping from 4 to a 2+ on 28/4. Those 5 extra days (2 “working”) could give that level of certainty rather than 2 weeks at a still restrictive 3 -

it's so much more than just retail online though. Construction, trades, basically restarting the (significant) part of the economy that is currently sitting on their hands

Of course the responsibility also falls on those industries to demonstrate they can operate with the appropriate distancing etc of their employees to avoid any chance of community transmission. I am sure a lot of work is going on behind the scenes to have SOPs in place but each industry is unique, and wearing PPE might not be practical in some instances like building sites.
-
@taniwharugby There will be ways to do this but the number of builders for a house build will be very different to a commercial site, for example.
On my walk this morning I went past a new supermarket being built and there have always been tradies working inside/outside.
