@antipodean and i think the "keep themselves in power" statement is pretty harsh.

Really? How else do you explain appalling policy decisions in the face of evidence? Unless you're invoking Hanlon's razor...

that depends on which policy decisions we are talking about

Easy as 1-2-3!So that's Tasmania, South Australia and NSW. What about WA, VIC and QLD? Bad ideas and naked self interest aren't the exclusive domain of certain political parties.

Do they control JobKeeper? That's what we're taking about, isn't it?

When it comes to politics, I generally don't restrict myself.
But specifically I'm in favour of increases to JobSeeker - there's no way the pre-covid amount was enough of a safety net for people to live off.
JobKeeper is, on the face of it, a reasonable response considering it was government policy to force people out of jobs. But it's unsustainable and on the evidence thus far not required if State governments pulled their collective heads out of their arses and became competent. That's before we acknowledge the people who got a massive increase in pay thanks to the taxpayer.

Victorian Premier Daniel Andrews has confirmed the state’s grim new record of 484 new coronavirus cases on Wednesday, and the death of two more people from the virus.
Two men in their 90s died in the 24 hours to Wednesday, both of them residents of aged care facilities, bringing Victoria’s death toll from the virus to 44.
There are now 3408 active cases, bringing the total number of cases since the pandemic began to 6739.
This represents an increase of 3038 active cases since July 1 - little more than three weeks ago, when there were 370 active cases in the state.
Of the 484 new cases, 97 have so far been linked to known outbreaks and the remaining 387 are under investigation.
There are now 205 people in Victorian hospitals with coronavirus, including 40 in intensive care.

Shit's getting out of hand. Pleased I got back into Qld while I could. -
im taking a "its serious but not out of hand" stance, we're still not seeing exponential growth and over the last two weeks you would say the trend it pretty flat, keeping in mind the number we see now are up to 10 days after the test were actually taken its actually only from this week on that we will start to see what effect the current restriction have had
still, very serious and everyone needs to do the right thing

We have border closures, citizens need to apply for permits and all because a couple of thousand people won't obey simple hygiene and distancing.

Andrews pleaded Wednesday for people to follow isolation guidelines. Between July 7 and July 21, he said, nearly 90 percent of people who tested positive in Victoria state did not self-isolate between when their symptoms began and when they were tested. More than 50 percent of people who tested positive in that same period, he said, did not self-isolate between when they were tested for the virus and when they got their results.
“That means people have felt unwell and just gone about their business,” he said at a news conference. “They have gone out shopping. They have gone to work. They have been at the height of their infectivity, and they have just continued on as usual."
There is “no doubt,” Andrews said, that people not following the guidelines are contributing to the rapid growth in case numbers, adding that those who are worried about losing income if they self-isolate can apply for government assistance.

We could ask them, but in this modern era it would be racist:
"Hi, you've come back from your sub-continental/ African shithole, ignored requests to quarantine and instead gathered to celebrate some important aspect of your particular sky fairy and go shopping. In doing so ensured that the average Australian dickhead who doesn't believe in hygiene or social distancing spread it into other States...

More deaths are coming though. It isn't going to get Florida-style ugly, but having almost 500 new cases a day surely isn't a good thing. It's in a bunch of nursing homes and that isn't going to end well.
