UK Gov Stats
The rate of deaths from all causes in June 2020 was 742.0 deaths per 100,000 persons in England and 837.5 deaths per 100,000 persons in Wales; both mortality rates were significantly lower than the five-year average (860.5 for England and 924.0 for Wales), though small increases in rates are expected over time as more deaths that occurred in June are registered.
So less deaths during a pandemic when preventable deaths from non-treatment are a supposed big issue?
Am I interpreting these figures wrong?

Don't think so if you are looking at a single month. That said, Chris Whitty and Vallance have been clear we really won't know the true figure for excess deaths until a full year on year figure is available.
Perhaps June is low because some of the people who would have died in June from natural causes passed away from Covid in March-May?
As an aside, the current 45k Covid death figure is under urgent review as the NHS counted people who tested positive for Covid as being victims - even if their deaths were unrelated. E.g. a woman who died in a car accident was counted as she had tested positive 6 weeks previously.

Thanks.
Yes been seeing more and more of the 'died with covid' v 'died of covid'
There's no denying Covid is virulent and lethal, but I'm beginning to wonder if it's been blown out of proportion.

Read somewhere that between 1,000 & 10,000 deaths covid "deaths" may not have anything to do with covid.
Would really like to know how that happened....

@Victor-Meldrew @MiketheSnow Probably belongs in the mens thread but you two have made this sort of thing mainstream news.

Odd. How and why they did/do that is the question.
Still leaves 35-44k death due to COVID.

Welcome to the load of bullshit that is the UK at the moment. Political allegiances define everything.

We all pay one way or another in the end. You’d know that if you weren’t a Polish hooker really.

@booboo @MajorRage Cause of death on a death certificate shows any contributory factor and any significant condition. Covid would undoubtedly be on the cert if a person had been tested positive. Whether that is the cause of death or not is another matter. This is one of the issues that makes national comparisons odious. What is the measure? How is that policed? Is there a political imperative overlaying the data?

I read a few weeks ago that UK excess deaths had dipped below average for that time of year.
But that is after a large excess bubble from the previous 2 to 3 months. From this article about 5 weeks ago. From: https://www.bbc.com/news/world-53073046
2 weeks after that article, the trend had returned to normal.
This is most recent data, showing since it diped below the average. For England only, not all UK:

It may be different in the UK, but in the US hospitals got emergency federal funding based on number of COVID deaths. These same hospitals were running at half or less capacity due to cancelled elective surgeries + people staying away despite emergency ailments, so were on the verge of bankruptcy / having to furlough doctors. Therefore the system incentivised them to juice up COVID stats as much as possible.
-
Different funding model in the UK but you can see how that would drive things in the US.
My guess what happened in the UK was due to Civil service culture of not admitting to mistakes and covering-up mistakes. Possibly someone accidentally included a small number of non-Covid deaths and rather than admit to it, simply carried on in the hope that no-one would notice.
