I'm no golfer but have become an instructor to my 16 year old "Stepson" who has to pass a module for PE. Apparently being an awesome caddy at Corp golf back in the day, drinking a can or two a hole and being able to crack it a fair distance at the driving range easily places me as the best golfer in his young impressionable life. "Maoris don't play golf" he laments.....I mentioned Phil Tautarangi and Michael Campbell and got a blank look in return......

So anyway, I've mentioned this to Taniwharugby, he has to hit at least 140 yards ( or metres ) with a 5 iron, get's six shots in which to do it. TR advised me to advise him to bend the knees slightly, not to use the baseball grip.....anyone got anything else which might help ? bear in mind I'm assuming no one here is at TRs level so might remember being shit better than he can.

MN5, two easy things I think help beginners (happy to be shot down though)

1) Keep all of left foot on the ground through the swing (assuming he's right handed)

2) Don't bend the left arm on the backswing
-

I said TO USE the baseball grip!

Grip and set up, everything else is just hit it, give him to omuch stuff to think about and it'll ruin him.
-

Just so you know JK, they do that to avoid the sun and sunburn. Not for a health reason but for a status reason. If you're black you're poor and obviously work outside, ergo you mustn't be rich and being rich is THE most sort after status in Thailand/Asia.

Whitening creams and other bullshit products is a multi billion dollar industry.

A great day out, the golf in Thailand eh? Starts with locker rooms and from then on you're treated like a pro

Cheers for that. Thought was sun related. Started well before the locker rooms. Drive in to the baggage unload area (3 lanes wide) and pop the boot for the guys to get the clubs out of and set up your cart for you!
-

Golfing in Asia is fucking awesome, apart from one very small thing. Speed.

Chinese & Korean golfers think 5 hours for a round is normal. And that's using karts.

Nothing pisses you off more than players marking balls etc when they lip out.
-

I played with 3 of the Korean U19 team one time in a tournament, they werent exactly quick, but then when you hit it 240 down the middle, then onto the green more times than not, it makes for a decent time, but if they werent on the fairway, they were slow...but I also know whne they are out practising on the course, they hit a ball in the rough, they dont even go get it, so was always a good way to stock up and get a few new Pro V's (cos these guys were mostly good, short off the tee but damn straight) except the girls ones as they usually drew red hearts on them! :)

Bought a new Ping driver & 3 rescue hybrid.
Shot 87 yesterday, with 7 pars. Previous records were 92 and 4 pars.
New tools, new man!
Although the old rage is still there ... I played Hoebridge whcih is near my house - it's not the most difficult course, but has it's good and bad holes. Toughest one for me as always been the number 1 stroke hole, a 442 yard (yesterday length) dead straight par 4. Anyway, new driver and one of the best shots of my life got me about 5 yards out for the birdie putt.
I of course, walked off with a 5.
Par 5th 9th, 535 yard dog log. Sweet drive, sweet rescue, sweet pitch - maybe 3 yard out birdie putt. I walked off with a FUCKING SEVEN. 4 putted the bastard. AND .. was playing with my old man who played utter dogshit and hacked his way down the hole. Halved the hole.
I fucking HATE golf. I mean LOVE golf!!!

@taniwharugby Major Rage's game will be a shambles for at least two years now, because he has "expectations" of his superb new driver!

The course i played in China last week was quite frankly fucking ridiculous.
Championship level course, rated in the top 10 in the Country apparently. Designed by Greg Norman (and his branding was everywhere). So of course fucking hard and fucking long.
Nearly every hole had an elevated tee box. And those that didn't had an elevated green (dropping one on the green on a par 3 that was long and uphill was one of my proudest moments in golf). Most tee boxes had an expanse of garden in front of them, probably water as well. The only benefit was i didn't hit it long enough to bring the fairway bunkers in to it.
Fairways were narrow, and none were next to another, so you either hit it or you lost your ball. Add in how uneven the fucking thing was, so that even if you hit said fairway, it was a pretty decent bet your ball was above or below your feet. Just utterly unfair for a player of my calibre.
Don't get me wrong, it was amazing, but also soul destroying. Throw in rental clubs that were waaay too short, and the results were predictable. I hit 105, and lost 9 balls. My partner plays every week, and usually scores in the 70s hit 97, and was waaay more frustrated than me.
Best hole you teed off from the top of what felt like a mountain. Clear 150m of garden and land on a narrow fairway. Fall had to be 50m. 2nd shot was a long iron uphill to an elevated green, around to the right. Hit it left? lost ball in a forest. Hit it right? down the hill to the clubhouse. Also lost ball. I was happy to take my 6.

@mariner4life Which course was it?
-
this fucking joint
-
looks like there is a 2nd course that is easier! So why the fuck did we play the hard one?
-
Don't think I've played that. Zhuhai courses on the whole are bloody awful. They've all contracted a big name to design them and they are unforgiving, and on the whole, not a a lot of fun. The worst one is Orient golf. I think it was about the 12th where my playing partner said to me
"let me guess ... right in the water, left in the shit .... again"
As much as I loved the caddies, carts, and cans approach to golf in China, I much prefer playing it pretty much so everywhere else in the world.
