@canefan the timing is right for conspiracy theorists that's for sure.
I've seen a few already, an irony is that if you were going full conspiracy; on current poll results they'd have buried as much as they could until September. Or Jacinda would have done a Muldoon and drunkenly called a snap election for Monday...

I've already seen three social media posts from 'friends' saying they want the government to lockdown the border completely - no in, no out.
Is that an idea that ppl support?
I felt very "you're not a good enough kiwi for not coming home, so too bad" when I read it. Sadly, some of us can't just bolt there even though we want to.

@gt12 Legally, they can't stop Kiwis (citizens and residents) from coming home.
I know that, although I suspect the government can do something about that if they want.

If they are aiming for elimination, then that's the only way.

If the media are right, the idiots in the country have started panic buying at supermarkets again. Haven't they learned anything?
We'll be in lockdown level 4 by the weekend 😔

@gt12 this was a few days ago on the current restrictions at the border:
Most Kiwis want New Zealand's borders to stay shut to non-residents, despite high-powered calls to soften restrictions to ease economic pain. That's according to the NZ Herald-Kantar Vote 2020 poll, suggesting 68 per cent of people think our border policy should be kept as is.
About 29 per cent thought the ban could be relaxed to allow in non-New Zealand residents and citizens, so long as they quarantined for two weeks and paid for it.
The poll further found that, although their city had the most quarantine facilities in the country, Aucklanders were more likely to favour a softening.Full article at: https://www.nzherald.co.nz/nz/news/article.cfm?c_id=1&objectid=12354081

Yep. Mate's wife was doing the shopping when the announcement was made about an announcement and then the countdown site crashed.

I think it's technically possible via epidemic management notices which allows the government the ability to amend legislation temporarily, but longer term requires Parliament to pass legislation which in turn now requires an election (I'm not in favour of doing it, just noting how it might be done). Better to have longer quarantines than that.

Four people and you're at level 3? Well this is clearly a repeatable long term policy.
Joke

Just wait for the (international) media coverage.
