Rant: Cyclists, Oz Bureaucracy ....

Cycling is the new golf for the "middle aged" professional. So instead of these arrogant fluffybunnies being hidden away on parks for 5 hours every saturday, they are now taking up the best seats at cafes, looking like tapeworms or cane toads (depending on their build), clogging the footpath with their car-priced bikes. Or they are the ones riding in packs taking up the road, glaring at you if you even think to come within the 1.5m of space they arrogantly assume they are entitled to, even if this means you are mostly in the other lane. They are the new scourge on humanity, and must be stopped at all costs.

once WTW finds this we're going to cop an earful.

I'm not sure if we already have a rant at cyclist threads and they usually turn in to mini shitfights (but we've got a bunch of Muslim/leftard-rightard threads on the go so one more's not going to matter).

Cyclists 1: As most Sydney residents will know there is a three lane road running from the Harbour bridge to Manly. The inside lane is often open for parking etc. Anyway, we were driving in the middle of the 3 lanes when we caught up with 3 cyclists all wearing light blue Manly named gear - now, 2 of these cyclists were riding within the inside lane while the third was riding just over the white line in the middle lane. He was doing this deliberately because he kept turning round to check that we weren't going to overtake him. Traffic wasn't busy at this stage and there was probably a good 400 metres ahead before there was a blockage on the road (a parked car). So were stuck behind this cyclist until this parked car when we were able to pass on the outer lane. About 200 metres up the road we're on the slope leading down to the Spit Bridge, braking as you do so as to keep under the speed limit, when these 3 cyclists went flying past us, dodging in and out of traffic (one went past our passenger door and the other went past the drivers door, we were still in the middle lane) and then went through a red light to get to the walk/cycle track - it was at the car park near the bridge so they didn't actually have to avoid any left hand side traffic. These are the kind of pricks out riding bikes these days.

Cyclists 2: When you come off the Manly Ferry from upstairs it's generally pretty crowded if you're not at the front so you just move with the crowd. Not this dickhead, jumps on his bike at the top then starts furiously ringing his bell as he weaves in and out of people clipping their bags and just avoiding collisions.

Cyclists 3: Walk/cycle tracks are idiotic, I'm always seeing near collisions and the odd collision. Why does a cyclist think that because they're rung a bell the walker is going to know exactly where they're cycling? Imagine if everytime a car driver got near a cyclist they could honk their horn and pass where they want with the expectation that the cyclist would just know where to move??? Bonkers. I do get quite conflicted when a hot female cyclist comes riding past me - I'd imagine it would be similar to Jegga finding himself physically attracted to a Green Party member.

Seriously though, what possess people to become complete and utter pricks once they purchase a bicycle?

Now I can't even bother with the Bureaucracy - but, in short, if you advertise you have a service (medicare cards) and you don't have all those services (applying for new medicare cards) then make it clearly known!

So rant over, but I suspect I would have lost most of you by about the 3rd sentence in the first big paragraph. It is cathartic though.

Couldn't agree more Leftard.

Their wankerish nature crosses national borders and vast oceans. They range from the lycra-clad fat arses who stink out cafés to the ridiculous tour de France wannabies who think they're entitled to form some kind of farking peloton in the middle of the road.

What did Hinch say? Cockroaches of the roads? Harsh but accurate. -

But that's fine, those guys go on tracks off road so as far as I'm concerned they can fill their fucken boots. ( although they also have a bit of an annoying sub culture mentality about them )

One of my best mates has been hooked on the cycling thing ironically enough. He is part of a team that race over the weekends, he's an ex mountain runner and finds cycling better on the joints ( he's still a few years younger than me though ). He has all the energy drinks and recovery gels and all that shit, not only that his bike cost about 12 grand, I picked it up and it is light as a fucken feather. To his credit he doesn't, and never would, ride it in traffic but they race on big long roads up Kapiti and the Rapa. Pretty sure he did ride it in town once or twice and got abused, fair enough, with his lycra, helmet and wraparound shades he looks like a real fluffybunny.
-

That's part of the annoyance though (to the pack riders). Most people do their pastimes in specific locations where they won't annoy others. Golfers play on golf courses at great expense because otherwise they would no doubt piss the neighbours off by playing a foursome from letterbox to corner of the street. Rugby is played at parks not in shopping mall carkparks.

Cyclists, however, want to play TdF wannabe games out on narrow hill roads where people are trying to travel to work, shops, sports etc.

That meme with the chick sums things up. 'Share the Road' is a one way thought.
-

As an occasional rider - on my MTB with hybrid tyres, I find a few of the MAMIL crowd to be fucking idiots, but a lot of them are OK. I don't road ride because you're asking to die in Western Sydney that way, yet they still do it. So mostly I see the ones using bike paths, with varying levels of fitness.

Of the percentage that shit me, the absolute worst are the ones who don't have any lights on their bikes despite riding in zones over 60km/h. Particularly when natural light isn't good. A lot of them are actually in breach of the regulations by not having reflectors or lights in those situations. But they all think they're Cadel Evans so they don't give a fuck, and I particularly hate the ones who road ride abreast in pairs or small groups which is just not fucking warranted; if you're out there for exercise, shut up and pedal!

There are new regulations coming that require helmets (or a fine) and require cyclists to carry photo id. There is a LOT of tension about that.
-

A couple of Oz mates have shared that on FB. Why the tension ? it's still a fucken vehicle on the road granted it's far less likely to kill you than a car.
-

Cyclists can afford to be sanctimonious because frankly, they are in the right.

I wonder what percentage of car commuters could do the same commute on a bike (and thus increasing their fitness, reducing use of fossil fuels, reducing pollution levels, reducing future leniance on tax payers due to not being a fat fluffybunny) in a similar / shorter amount of time if there was equivalent infrastructure available for bikes as there is for cars.

Oh that's right there is - it's called THE ROAD. People get so much more infuriated by cylicsts than they do by poor/arrogant/aggressive drivers and I've never understood why. Nepia, would you have posted the above if it was done by some guy on a scooter, or in a Mini? You and I both know you wouldn't have.

Times they are a changing kids, either change with, or be caught in the past, permanently. Realistically, half of the roads you see are likely to be designated to non-fossil fuel modes of transports within a generation.
-

I certainly don't buy the whole "if you don't cycle you're a walking heart attack fat fluffybunny" argument. There's plenty of options for people wanting to stay in shape and diet is more of an issue than sedentary lifestyles.
-

I don't think a single cyclist or person ever said that. You can of course be fat and a cyclist, as well being skinny and not being a cyclist.

From a fitness perspective though, its a pretty tough argument that sitting in a car is better for you than riding on a bike.
