As I understand it the allegation is Big Sam took his lawyer and financial adviser to the meeting and negotiated a 400 pound fee for advice on how to circumvent FIFA's 3rd party ownership regulations.

If true the Telegraph isn't the immoral party in this episode.

I 100% agree, but Sam apparently does say "I can help set it up... but I'll only do it if we run it past the FA" So he should be ok.

Re the merits of the Telegraph, their sting looked at -

The assistant manager of a high-profile football club accepted a £5,000 cash “bung”
Ten managers were named by players’ agents as taking bribes to fix player transfers
Two well-known managers discussed becoming ambassadors for the same fictitious firm as Sam Allardyce
Another high-profile manager admitted his players broke FA rules by betting on their own games but he failed to report it
A senior figure at a Premier League club helped undercover reporters to formulate a plan to bribe managers

Seriously, in what world do we not want our journalists persuing those? IE if those were happening in NZ rugby would we be OK with the Herald turning a blind eye & writing a bullshit story more in keeping with womans day? People bitch & whine about cricket spot fixing where a guy bowls a no ball, but scream their tits off when the press dig up the above? WTF. .

    @gollum

Yeah but where does undercover journalism end and entrapment begin?

I get what you mean & I think the ones like when they got Lawrence Dalaigio saying he did coke were pointless, or when Warney fucked a fat girl, but in this case they asked the England manager about bungs & he bit, if the whole story was "Gary Neville, he's dick right? Oh hell yes!" - Big Sam slags off Neville!!" then yes, thats not journalism.

I'm ok with what they were targeting - undeclared (illegal) cash in football, same way if they approached 3 NZ super coaches & said "I represent Toulon, if you can help us sign Barrett / Cruden / Sopoaga we will give you $100k that you dont need to run past the taxman" & one bit that'd be a valid story & not entrapment.

@Hooroo Incredible - he covets the job for years, looks like he'll never get a chance at it, the cards fall into place in 2016 (Roy's useless Euro, Sunderland surviving and there being no alternatives), he manages for one game (100% record) and now he's gone. Sunderland must be checking the contract they gave to Moyes to see if there is a 90 day clause included.

Is there an appointed England Manager that has a 100% record? He could stay in the record books.

Sacked because of his behaviour at the meeting not what he has done. There is also a wider investigation which has uncovered that 8 current or former EPL managers have been accused of receiving “bungs” for player transfers. Stay tuned.

Gooorn! I had forgotten about his shady past, this isn't his first time having the faint whiffs of corruption.

@gollum I understand what you are saying, and i agree with you. However those things aren't what they led with, they led with the current England manager being an embarrassing prat, and successfully got him fired. The rest of the investigation will be very interesting indeed.

Aren't their World Cup qualifiers next week? jesus what timing aye?

Replace Sam with Ewen McKenzie in this story and it reads similar...

And England wonder why they get knocked out by Iceland in Euros, shambles of an organisation

Has nobody every looked at the EPL before? Redknapp has been doing these sorts of shonky deals for years! Big Sam was just sharing the tricks of the trade with people - he thought he was helping out!

Thats the reality ... but the reality is the the England football coach must be sacked if caught doing it.

Bit of a sting operation, but such is life.

So now the dust has settled a bit do you think it was justified setting him up ?

I'm not entirely against these sorts of things being done.

But I am against the papers only going front-page public when they catch somebody. Say they setup Roy Hodgson in similar circumstances, but he walked away saying he would take no part in that, and said nothing wrong.

Isn't that equally as deserving of publication?

@MajorRage I agree but newspapers seem to operate on two basic theories " charm and betray " and " if it bleeds it leads" so they wouldn't be too interested in a story like that.
If this guy was actually dodgy I doubt the police were that interested in putting too many resources into something like this.

Redknapp doing it was one of the core reasons he never got the England job - he was seen as shadey as all feck. It's also one of the reasons those old school English managers never get the big clubs, its always the shadey fuckers like West Ham, Portsmouth etc

The 2 big nails (according to the new this morning) were him jumping into bed with guys he had zero knowledge of at the smell of £400k. Thats not a good look for an England manager (on £3m a year). And second, him going "the FA rules are shit, I can help you dodge those", when enployed by the FA (on £3m a year).
