It's because you're all pig shaggers, basic really, don't understand the confusion?
oh shit, were you there that night at Dockside? I swear, in my state she looked much, much better.

Google suggests that it was originally a term for all NZers dreamed up by the convicts but that Sth I slanders adopted it to describe their northern counterparts because of a deep seated inferiority complex and self projection
Alternatively its because Sth Islanders allege those north of Cook Strait are sub-human

@Hooroo weird ,apart from Canerbry I've never heard anyone else ever use the term and I just put it down to the effects of a genepool so lacking in diversity its probably only matched in nature by the Chatham island black robin .
Anyway when I was living in Australia someone from down that way got quite worked up when we were chatting , he was ranting how fucked we'd be without the south island generating all our power. I guess that makes them feel relevant in some way looking at it like that.

In chatting, you were probably being a bit of a Pig Island cock. Many people need to watch that.
It was a term I first heard at CBHS about 4th form, at the time it seemed to suit. Recently on the Fern some special snowflake Pig Islanders got a bit precious about it so now it works precisely as intended.

I thought you had been using it more than a year... I guess not.
