Although not mentioned in that article for obvious reasons, but Dan Crowley was in the 1991 RWC squad, he went one better than just detective.

I can remember the occupations of lots of the AB teams from my youth. From their profiles.
Eg I'll try to do the 87 World Cup team:
Gallagher: Policeman
Kirwan: Shamateur
Stanley: owner driver
Taylor: ?
Green: Builder
Fox: marketing? Worked for that CSL or IMG or sum fin like that.
Kirk: med student / doctor
Shelford: navy
M Jones: student
A Whetton: ?
Pierce: Policeman
G Whetton: ?
Drake: ?
Fitzpatrick: builder
McDowell: publican? -

It was a bit easier a few years earlier when I first started watching the game, just insert "farmer" for every second player.
1982 was first rugby I watched.
Hewson: can't remember, but know his family business was in Hutt , can't think what it was?
S Wilson: publican
Pokere: ? (Got up to white collar shananigans after retirement iirc), thinking an accountant?
Taylor: ?
Fraser: publican
W Smith: ?
Loveridge: pig farmer
Mexted: car salesman (family business)
Hobbs: lawyer
Shaw: farmer
Haden: everything .....

Not in the England 1991 squad but my favourite was Darren Garforth. Passport said Tubular Technician. Reality: Scaffolder.

'Rubbishman' could be replaced with 'paid cross training' -- the job was just running, lifting and throwing for hours on end. Got people bloody fit, and you can pay les mills to let you do it with a medicine ball now
I think Chris Tregaskis was a rubbishman for a while too.

He was genuinely an apprentice butcher circa 1983 etc. I think it was his dad's butchery.
Not sure exactly when he started summering in Trevino.

I've got that book that was released a few years back ranking the 100 best All Blacks of all time.
Well at least I did.... I leant it to someone recently and can't remember which one of my firends has pinched it.
The best part is looking up what the players did for a living.

I think Chris Tregaskis was a rubbishman for a while too.
Tregaskis nickname was trash, he was a qualified builder but went to the rubbish trucks , he's a tiler now. Jerry Collins was a rubbish man too, a few ex Wellington players I've met over the years did a stint picking up rubbish. Wellington was one of the last places for them to pick up the bins and drop them back. That must have sucked if you had the oriental bay run you'd be bloody fit though.

Pretty sure Warwick Taylor was a teacher. Wayne Smith, as well - but for at least a while he worked at the Belfast Freezing Works.
I worked in the same building as Jock Hobbs and caught the lift with him on several occasions.
Chris Jack is working as a builder these days, in Nelson. Saw him at the supermarket last year.
