I've been told for many years that eating red meat is bad for me. Now I've just read a piece in the NY Times about red meat and gout ("Red Meat Blues").
Last week there was renewed and heightened alarm over the health effects of too much red meat — of any red meat, really. A report that received much panicked attention posited that even three-ounce servings of beef, lamb and the like could increase the risks of heart disease and cancer and decrease a person’s life span.
I realise that a high protein diet eating a lot of beef and lamb - while leading a sedentary lifestyle - would be unhealthy for me and make me fat and possibly increase the likelihood of preventable diseases.

However, I am not fat. I'm active, and I'm looking to add high protein, and I love the taste of beef and lamb, which I eat probably 3-4 times a week. (It used to be more, but I've replaced some meals with seafood.)

If I maintain a high active fitness lifestyle, is the red meat still gonna kill me and shred years off my life??

Bart - what are you eating to put slabs on yourself?

The iron content alone in lean red meat is hugely valuable.
The whole reason people used to eat meat and 3 veg is that it was a balanced meal. As our work lives started using less energy we needed to go leaner on the meat and cut the carb (spuds) part down to adjust the energy quotient. The basics of protein/ fibre/ carbs/ vitamins/ minerals still exists.
If I stop eating red meat no amount of supplement stops me from losing weight and lacking energy due to the lack of absorbable iron.

Yeah I'm a pretty big meat eater too RT, I guess too much of ANYTHING is potentially bad but I cut the fat off the lamb and beef everytime. Add in chicken ( pork gives me crook guts ) and I'd say damn near every meal has Meat in it.

Also a South African mate of mine gets me biltong every now and again which I can demolish like no ones business.

Surely it's better on the whole than farkin protein powder ?

Yeah prefer to get my protein from real foods too rather than whey powder etc. Having said that, I would have at least 1 protein shake a day but more often then not 2.

I'm the same as you MN5, eat plenty of red meat but always resist eating the fat etc. I havent read that report Red Terror but not too worried to be honest.

We prob have red meat for dinner 3 times a week, chicken 3 times a week and fresh seafood once. Plus I will have either chicken breast or tuna daily as part of my lunch and mid arvo snack.

By the way, that report has been pretty discredited, or at the least the reporting of it has. The "science" behind it was pretty weak and couldn't really discount other factors. I'll see if I can dig up the counter links.
Here's one;
In short, everything in moderation, and try to eat real food (including meat) instead of stuff in boxes and cans.

I dont eat a huge amount of red meat (steak, lamb) as much as I love it. Have a variety of meats in my diet, even have the odd day where I have no meat (but these are maybe 1 or 2 times a month) one of the meats I have increased since changing my diet is Tuna & Salmon (increased not the right word, I never used to eat them, but now I have them at least 3 times a week) instead of processed sandwich meats.

I just cry bullshit to all those reports, for and against anything, Study enough and you can find bad shit about anything. Maybe we could do a report on breathing. Breathing leads to death. In a study, it has been proved 100% that everyone who breaths, will die. Some earlier than others. So ways around breathing are being investigated, and a further 200 million dollars have been awarded to Bart for stating the obvious and further research...

WE eat read meat maybe a couple of times a week in lean down, and much the same normally. Usually lean steak, or lean beef mince. Other than that it's chicken, chicken or chicken, and fish too, although ness can't stomach fish now after our first dietician had us almosty growing gills we ate so much fish.

Gills, now that would be a way around breathing... Maybe a billion dollar study into converting humans to fish, I must apply now...

The key part to those reports that Red Terror was referring to was that the diets were self reported by nurses involved in the study over a really long time frame. I'm sure they listed every Mars bar they ate...

I love the lamb, too. Delicious.

You'd be surprised how many people up this way (pork eaters!) have never tried it.
