I saw Three Billboards outside Ebbing, Missouri tonight. Mrs JC wanted to see it after Frances McDormand won the Golden Globe for it. I was in two minds as a movie about a mother whose daughter was raped and murdered had all the makings of a very depressing night out.
Wrong.
What a fucking brilliant movie. McDormand, Woody Harrelson and Sam Rockwell are just outstanding, and the rest of the cast are spot on. Some proper laughs (some of which are just wrong), unexpected twists, much more violence than I expected and a few bits that were difficult to watch.
Go and see it.

Fantastic film I thought. Frances MacDormand is imho one of the greatest actresses around today. I’m a huge fan of Sam Rockwell too* , he was brilliant in that film I thought as was Harrelson .
Not exactly an easy film to watch but well worth it.The Florida project is similar in a lot of ways, lots of black comedy , scenes that are uncomfortable to watch. Willem Defoe is outstanding I though in that film as are the kids and the main parent.
Not sure if it’s still on at theatres though.*if you haven’t seen Moon or The way way back do yourself a favour and watch them . It shows what bullshit the Oscars are that he didn’t win one for either film.

@jegga We saw The Florida Project a couple of weeks ago. I thought it was outstanding but could never say I enjoyed it. It never seemed like anybody was acting and it was like secretly watching some people’s quite shit lives spiral into inevitable disaster. Defoe was brilliant and for me the biggest shock of the film was how his character’s decency seemed so out of place.
I don’t have any doubt that there are plenty of places like that all over the US but seeing it on film is as close as I need to get. It made me think about all the times I’ve driven on freeways past places like that and never given a thought to the desperation that lives outside my air conditioned windscreen. Unfortunately President Trump doesn’t really have to look overseas if he wants to find shitholes.
BTW, the lady who plays Halley is some actress. Or else she’s just playing herself and she’s going to die very young.

That was the woman who plays Halley’s first acting role apparently, the director discovered her on Instagram selling marijuana themed clothing and she had the look he wanted. When you take that into account she was incredible, I think those tattoos are going to limit her career though.
Agree about Dafoe, part of his research was working with some real “ hotel” managers to see what goes on in those shitholes.
Watching it you knew there was no possible way it was going to have a happy ending, it stayed with me for a while afterwards too. -

What got me was knowing that while you felt for Halley’s situation and sympathised with her using her limited resources, and the CFS people were arseholes, it was still the right call to take Moonie out of there.
And the fade out of the two girls running alone into Disneyworld was probably the scariest ending they could have put in it...

Saw Brawl in cell block 99 after seeing it had 92% on rotten tomatoes. It had some good moments, some extreme violence, but ultimately I found the story a bit predictable, Don Johnson's character was out of central casting for a western and I didn't really feel the depiction of his prison and cell block 99. Vince Vaughn tried hard but he just isn't that menacing to me, 2 skinheads out of 5 cigar toting wardens
-
24 Hours to Live - Ethan Hawke in a John Wick kinda movie...also stars Rutger Hauer
I liked it, fast paced 90mins of action.

I watched Everything Must Go on Netflix, a Will Farrell film that is.... not a bloody comedy! WTF! He was actually OK, but I just couldn't get past the fact that it was him and was waiting the whole movie for him to do something completely outrageous.
It was based on a book so pretty difficult to turn into a movie that properly captures the emotions etc, but wasn't total shit in the end I guess.

Free Fire. I think someone mentioned it a few pages ago. Holy shit it's goddam perfect. Funny, stupid, violent, and short. Devoid of plot and character development, it's just watching stupid people react to a situation.

@mariner4life plus Brie Larsen!
-
@taniwharugby Yep, Brie Larsen is definitely a plus.
Free Fire is great, one of my favourite films of last year. I haven't watched any of the other films by the same director (High Rise, Kill List etc), but definitely have them on my to watch list now.

You had me at funny stupid and violent, is it Strikeback levels of all three? I need something to tide me over till the new series starts.

I've only watched three series of Strikeback but I wouldn't say they're similar ... no boobs for one. After that, if you're still reading, it's just a funny shoot out movie with some annoying characters you want to see get shot. M4L summed it up perfectly actually, although his review missed Brie Larsen so he might be a wrong-un.

Hahahaha. Yeah I’m a bit worried about the lack of Larson in his review too. That would be the first thing I mentioned.

she's pretty average without cleavage, and there is zero cleavage. Also i was too busy laughing at Hammer and Copley. Holy shit Copley being over the top is funny.
