What a pathetic thing to complain about, let alone get a ban for. Should be no ban for that, and a glass of Harden the fuck up for the Poms.

A ban for being mean, unbelievable.

Six weeks is probably too long - but lets leave the wankerish sledging in cricket.

It's been a front row tradition for ever. This isn't some new thing that has just started

Pffft, like any front rowers have the mental capacity to come up with a retort, let alone the original sledge.

But to be serious for a second, racial taunting used to be a part of that tradition too ... I'm pretty sure it isn't now.

I would question whether it was "part of that tradition" although in my (admittedly) limited experience playing in Australia the overwhelming number of race-based taunts were from brown people to white people. We also had an Asian half back who copped it big time.

At any rate, there is a massive difference between mamma insults and racial slurs.

Why? If an excuse for it is because it's "tradition", then part of that tradition was racially sledging, pretty short bow I would think.

I just don't see what it adds to the game?

Where is your evidence that there was a "tradition" of racial sledging?

It's not even in the same ball park. Ignore rugby for a second, abuse/banter between guys is just part of growing up.

It's important to learn how to deal with it, and not "cry to mommy".

The best response to shit talk is to win the game/smash them in a tackle (second is theoretical from my point of view...)

@kirwan haha my sons team a couple of weeks back got a lesson in talking smack, and ended up being the point where the other team got the upper hand.

A couple of our bigger and better players came off upset over what the other team was saying to them and calling them (especially when it wasn't even that bad)...their dads and I were like why is that upsetting? If you knock him on his arse in the next tackle, you simply stand over him grinning, no better retort!

    Don't get mad, get even!

It aint like people in life don't take any opportunity to step on people, so is a good place to learn to deal with shit.

I wonder if that fact had something to do with the length of the ban.....

    No, not at all.

Race wasn't mentioned at all. The citing was for "a serious and gross verbal abuse of a highly-offensive sexual nature in relation to a player’s mother accompanied by a highly-offensive sexual gesture". The gravity of the offence (intentional and deliberate) lead to a mid-range entry point of 12 weeks in this case. He got the full 50% deduction.

@bones You never know on the fern whether something is meant literally or not. I can't read people's minds, especailly not the minds of people I don't know personally. That's probably a good thing 😬

Kind of crazy that it’s the equivalent of a headbutt.

Sticks and stones and all that.

Although does make it quite intriguing to try and think of how you might unintentionally perform "serious and gross verbal abuse of a highly-offensive sexual nature in relation to a player's mother accompanied by a highly-offensive sexual gesture". Seems kinda specific. Man those kids must hate their dads.

I'd been okay with a one-week suspension (or two if you take into consideration that it's a worldwide event involving countries that are much more conservative than we are), but this is way over the top.
