    1. Craig Dowd
    2. Derren Witcombe
    3. Carl Hayman
    4. James Ryan
    5. Norm Maxwell
    6. Victor Vito
    7. Luke Braid
    8. Steven Luatua
    9. David Kirk (c)
    10. Luke McAlister
    11. James Lowe
    12. John Schuster
    13. Craig Innes
    14. Charles Piutau
    15. Matthew Ridge

Someone will probably come up with better picks for 7, 10 (McAlister takes his rightful place at 12 then), and 11.

    Nick Evans at 10

@shark Goldsmith had a lot of injuries. I remember watching him for Waikato as an 18-yr old, when he had a very good game against the 1988 Welsh team.

@mn5 Actually Kahui is a good one for leaving too soon. Although, he had an impressive list of achievements for his short career.

Was one of those achievements being the greatest Foodbill in modern AB history?

Yeah Kahui was a fantastic player but never had a long enough run at it due to injuries, and the misfortune to play centre at the same time as Conrad Smith. His greatest achievement will be blocking up a wing in the RWC 2011 win.

Like the Jasin Goldsmith call. Where did he go anyway? Was it an extremely early injury enforced retirement?

There was a kid called Brendon Daniel. Ridiculously promising BOP winger at the onset of the prefessional era I think, who went overseas at something like 20 and as far as I know never returned to play but nor did he make it wherver he went, surprisingly. Anyone else remember him?

Another in that sort of category was an open side from Canterbury called Greg Smith in around 1994/95. Crazy promise then disappeared.

    Goldsmith: yep injury.

I recall I was at an early season game at Eden Park where he broke his leg very badly. Either that ended it all or he never fully recovered and struggled to come back. Will have to google.

Anyway, interesting article here about what a bright spark he was. (I had a wee laugh at the line about the 1999 World Cup and who might feature there...)

How good was Mose Tuiali'i, and how much potential did he have? I'm a bit hazy on him.

@tim I'd probably rank him just below Vito by the time he left. Would do an adequate job but never quite got to see if he could be a good starter, rather than bit-part filler.

A no.8 that never fulfilled his potential was Isitolo Maka. The test in Durban in 1998 changed when he left the field, never to seen in black again.

Mose was a beast for the Saders.

Henry brought him in around that transition time when Collins was moved from 8 to 6 and he was looking for a new no8 trying several options - Rush, Mose, Bates, Lauaki, Newby - before ultimately settling with Rodders. Mose was decent but wasn’t given the time to develop as an AB for whatever reason. He was only 23 when he first made the ABs.

Crikey, some ordinary names in that list.

Didn't Craig Green leave NZ after the RWC in '87 for Italy?

    But then, who was?

I couldn't work out why Mose never made it. He had every physical gift needed to be a great Test 8, but it never clicked
