@mn5 I should have added that I didn't give a fuck. Smells like brain fluid...
Grunge wasn't my thing in the 1990s but I did like some songs from the other big 3. Of the bands you list AIC, Soundgarden and FNM are my favourites. I've seen all three live in recent years.
I've seen none so I am extremely jealous.
fucking what?
It's true.
Please don't hate me
can i ask why? a musician who loves these bands, and you have never been to a show?

@Nepia @Paekakboyz this always comes up. The talk is around 90s Alternative music, people will say "yea man, i love Nirvana/Pumpkins/Pearl Jam" and some speccy fuckwit will go "of course, the Pixies are so much better, and without them none of the music you like would even exist" sniffs own fart smugly
I just like their music better than all three of those bands. By some margin. I'm trying to push a fart out with no luck at the moment.
-
@mariner4life don't jump out of the boat! I'm just getting the gaff ready!
But I really do rate the Pixies, not as the single source of all things awesome from the late 80's onward, but they did have a big influence on those emerging 90's bands.
Anytime you are getting anyone pinning 'everything' on a single band/musician you are looking at a pretty limited view on things.

It’s worth revisiting the story of the poor bastard who was kicked out of Nirvana and Soundgarden right before both hit the big time
https://www.nytimes.com/2013/07/02/magazine/evermans-war.html
Imho Nirvana are as overrated as the Pixies , if Cobain hadn’t decorated the walls with his brains I’m sure he’d be as reviled as Axl Rose by now.

I've never been a Nirvana fan but I can remember exactly what I was doing at uni when I heard the news about Cobain.
Without clicking on the links I'll name 10 bands of that era who were better than Nirvana.
Stone Temple Pilots, Faith No More, Chillis, Alice in Chains, Metallica, Rage, Janes Addiction, GnR, Pearl Jam, Soundgarden.
Getting dead sure builds a reputation but in saying all that learning 'Smells like Teen spirit' on the axe got me laid so I guess I have Kurt to thank for that.
Every music discussion on here seems to eventually make it back to the bands you mention above.
I reckon Bleach (played at full volume) kicks the arse of any of them. Particularly the Chillis, cant stand their numerous versions of the same song about how they come from California.
Agree with M4L re the pixies, overrated art fag rock.

Never had the opportunity. Simple as that.

With the very odd exception the Chillis haven't done anything good in over 20 years. They're basically a different band nowadays.

I listened to BSSM the other day an it's... okay. SOme good. Some very meh. It's not bad, but it's not as great as i seem to remember.
I then listened to Mothers Milk. Mothers Milk still rules. They were way more fun then. They should always be a fun band.

Unless you pay to see them live like I did at the Enmore. Their gig lasted less than an hour. No encore. Fuck them.

x 2 for me. 92 and 96. Both times at the end of a long tour. I echo these sentiments.

@nepia the preamble while waffling sets up the series well imho, it gets better and better after that
Maybe part of why I found it less interesting was the Nirvana focus as I'm not a big Nirvana fan. I just clicked at the end of part 3 that the series was written 8 years ago.
Yeah I was never really a fan either , I’ve worked with a few guys who were born around the time the article starts off and when you get talking about music and concerts you’ve been to they start frothing about Cobain and asking what it was like to be around when Nevermind came out. I can remember the first time I heard it and I didn’t hate it but there were other bands around like Soundgarden that I thought were a lot better.
He nails Pearl Jam though , Vitology is self indulgent crap on a par with Pink Floyd’s the final cut, I completely lost interest in them after that.to be fair he nails most of them (if a little forgiving of Nirvana, but he obviously loves them, so i am cool with it). I found myself nodding away, especially from about 7 on. I can see why i got in to dance music in the late 90s.
Agree, less interest in the later groups makes those articles pretty boring.

It reminded me of that James Hatfield quote “ if a band has a k where a c should be they are probably shit”.

He seems as awesome a bloke as Lars Urlich seems a dick. I guess they balance eachother well.

I saw the RHCP at a BDO in Glasgow, they didnt come on until about 9pm, played for maybe 90 mins, went off, came back on did an Encore, but wasnt that great, plus by then I was so over it haha.
Earlier in the day was Electric Six, PJ Harvey, Queens of the Stone Age and Foos.
Queens of the Stone Age were best.
-
@rocky-rockbottom I still listen to Melvins a bit. By christ they have released some albums over the years. I just checked their discography on wiki and it's fucking long!
-
@Rocky-Rockbottom Mr Bungle ftw!! Patton really pissed Kiedis off for being so fucking awesome.
My entry point for the Chilis was BSSM and Mothers Milk. Huge fan of Uplift Mofo although I farking hate 'behind the sun'.
I've seen them several times. The BSSM gig was epic as I was just a turd former whose dad let him sneak into the mosh pit (supported by HLAH - wow, naked dudes rocking out!!). That gig is etched in my memory. Since then I saw them once more for a tour in Wellington and 2-3(?) times at BDO. Not being a muso I probably had lower expectations as I enjoyed all the gigs, possibly due to my state of inebriation or ... ummm other things.
