Oh, man, I never heard that news, you broke it to me. I saw him a couple times a few decades back, once as a soloist, the other as part of the fabled acoustic trio with Al Di Meola and John McLaughlin. He was a master.

Speaking of McLaughlin... just earlier today I was listening to Miles Davis "On the Corner," the most controversial record of his career. It is a difficult listen, but there is some genius. Black Satin has an especially deep funk groove with sitars, whistles and a hot wah-wah on trumpet. It's a strange ear-worm.

I hope you caught that Phil Lynott (Thin Lizzy) tribute to the King I posted a page back. Mark Knopfler's wammy-bar is all over it, and he appears in that Top of the Pops video too.

I think this thread serves two purposes: to showcase new/lesser known stuff; or just to spur a few memories in people.

This post is geared towards the second. Have started listening to Shihad again. Man do i love me some Shihad. I've seen them live, like, a lot, and they have never disappointed. They're a fucking great guitar band, not just for NZ, but in general.

My favourite Shihad album is Killjoy, and this is my favourite track on that album (just, Bitter and Gimme Gimme are both rippers as well).

Shihad...wow. One of my all time favs as well. Saw them a lot in my teens and often paid $5 for 5 bands at the power station on a Friday night and it shihad would be the main act. Sometimes you had the likes of head like a hole too, the dead flowers or pumpkin head and gad to pay $8 or 12 to get in. Good times.

Fav shihad song would be It off Devolve ep.

The other main music of my youth were the bands from the blue tile lounge up on k road. Being a shore boy, Nothing At All had a cult like following. These guys ripped shit up and a couple of years in a row clocked up 100gigs in the year. Even our own band did Nothing at all covers. Shit, nothing at all even played at my and tins school ball! Was a shame that Tony the lead singer passed away from cancer at a very young age.

A couple of their classics

I still got it on tape! Also got alot of other cassettes from late 80s/early 90s. Bought so many cassingles back then. $2.95 for 3 to 4 songs was value. I've just got nothing to play them on sadly.

so, with my "i'm not really in to Pearl Jam" stance (a mix of everyone else my age considering them the greatest thing ever, and being more in to the Tool/Soundgarden/Faith No More side of things) i may have overlooked what a really excellent album "Vs" is. I randomly whacked it on over the weekend, and started thinking "shit, good song. shit good song. shit, another really good song" even "Daughter" doesn't suck as hard as i have always thought. I would consider it their best work (although that's only really out of two albums, and while "Ten" is good, it's pretty overrated).

Anyway, i must have listened to "Dissident" about 20 times in the last couple of days. Eddie Vedder's vocal track on this song kicks ass. Here's a live version
