Being a Northland fan, I feel for them, not a fun time having been there, but glad we no longer hold that record!

East Coast did win the Meads Cup in 2012 so had actually won something before their losing streak.

Should've been put into the Heartland Competition a long time ago.

The financials can’t be great either.

A Southland-Whanganui game would be interesting, and probably very competitive.

Didn't Northland have a longer run 2003-2005? 27 losses in 3 seasons? Plus the first 3 in the following season makes 30 losses in a row? Or are they arbitrarily distinguishing between NPC, Air NZ, ITM etc?

There is a chart that covers all divisions in the article and East Costs have two stretches and Northland only one so maybe not?

    @kiwipie

I thought so. Maybe there was a draw in that run? Winless streak vs losing streak?

Before Air NZ Cup started in 2005 they still had Promotion/Relegation games which is probably why Northlands mid 2000s run isn't being counted.

Should've been put into the Heartland Competition a long time ago.

Think that's a little harsh. If they did that they would need to drop another team to even the comp up. Southland are just in a trough - they're still producing some good young players for NZ Sec Schools and U 20s so might only be a season or 2 from coming right..

Also don't rule out some off field issues - sandwiched on either side of the 19 match winless streak by Northland was seasons they made the top 4. Only major difference in my opinion was Derren Witcombe being coach for those top 4 seasons. Perhaps they need to find the right coach to get the best out of what they have.

    Can't believe I'm defending Southland...

@kiwipie yeah even that muppet John Campbell did a peice on it, and our win came at Mt Smart v Counties with guys like Gus playing (received a calculated YC) and was Rangers debut season...but as Chiefy says, we had the promo-relegation games each year we won to break the run of losses.

Surely by definition they aren't top division games? And with due respect to Northland 2003-2005, they were much worse than Southland 2016-2018. Hell even the mighty Steamers only just scraped a win v Southland - oh just remembered we only just scraped a win v Northland in 2004 (the only time I've met TR)

@kiwipie still counts as an official NPC competition game, wasnt our fault HB sucked 🎣

Not sure I agree we were much worse either (some quality players in those years) for Southland, like us, losing becomes a habit.

We were actually a pretty good side during those years but the gap between 1st and 2nd was too big back then for a one of game. If they'd given us a chance in 1st division (instead of changing the rules the year we won so that we had to play relegation matches) for a season I reckon we'd have been winning a game or two before too long. πŸ˜‰

@kiwipie Don't know about that. Both sides are/were pretty bad.

Southland will be fine, they're just going through some tough times like Northland have in the past.
