We were in town on Saturday, only visited the wharf area ( mrs was picking up her Auckland marathon pack)
Their were a fuck ton of them lying around and being used.
Give the number of ACC claims in such a short time how long to they disappear?500 more hit the pavement this week @Canefan is lookingat villas in the south of France .
Is that your donation to the anti fluoride movement?
I don't know why but MSM have a raging boner for the cost of dentistry right now and it is pissing me off. I had a guy come in late today, who is not a regular dental attender. As a result of not taking adequate precautions such as a regular exam and x-rays he needs a root canal treatment that will cost him the equivalent of 7 years worth of routine exams at my practice (we are not the cheapest nor the most expensive, so he might get up to 12 years of exams somewhere else).
There was a lady on Sunday last night, she bemoaned the fact that dentistry was so expensive, a dentist ended up doing the treatment for free as a publicity stunt. She needed 13 extractions and some partial dentures. Perhaps if she looked at her basic oral hygiene and her diet she might not have been in that mess???
Fucking pisses me off, in this age of not wanting to take accountability that we need to find something or someone other than ourselves to blame, like expensive dentistry or that pervasive advertising that forced her to shove all those sodas and sweets in her gob instead of spending a few bucks on a good toothbrush some floss and fluoride toothpaste, and learning how to use them properly.
I know I'm probably preaching to the choir a bit on an informed platform like TSF, but the path to good dental health is pretty easy for the majority of the population.
Brush teeth properly 2x day
Floss daily
Eat a reasonably low carb/refined sugar diet (high frequency intake is bad)
Get a regular check up from the dentist. It will cost less than an annual service for your car, approximately the equivalent of 30 to 40 $5 coffees, or a couple of big nights (or one big night) on the bash. It's that simple. Rant over
13 extractions? Jesus.
Sunday TV show I mean. She had to be under 35 years old
13 extractions and a female under 35 is starting to sound like quite a different TV show. Just how late was it on?

@canefan how important is the flossing. Asking for a friend, but brushing regularly seems straightforward, but never really got into the daily flossing habit. Maaybe once a week or two ...
Floss every tooth you want to keep mate. Use thin floss, Colgate is fine. Just don't Johnson and Johnson reach floss because it's shit. It should never hurt, check this out. Should take no more than 60 seconds

@canefan TBH, I brush twice a day, floss, use mouth wash, eat pretty well, but I have had 2 extractions, think I have 1 tooth that is still 'perfect' I have one of my molars that will have to be extracted soon as I cant afford the $1200-$1400 to sort it, thats without all the other work I know I need done.
The only thing my teeth have going for them is they are straight.
When I lived in the UK, I had a regular check ups, and if I had a filing at the same time, £25, in NZ a check up is >$100, plus a filling if required is >$200.
Granted in the UK I was with an NHS dentist, but simple fact is, our household income is probably average for NZ< but dental cost is extortionate.
I had a bridge done when in the UK, £600, came back to NZ, $4,500 to replace...my wife had to have an implant, $10,000 plus monthly trips to Auckland for a year.
I had to get a root canal doen in Auckland, partially covered by ACC (childhood injury) still cost me $1800, 3 visits to AUckland 2 years ago.
So I respectfully disagree with you as it isnt as simple and straight forward as you make it.
While the main part of the story focussed on that lady, the point they should have been focusing on is why is your body's health covered by the Govt subsidised health system, but your mouth, which plays a big part in overall health, not?

I bought a water flosser on the recommendation of my dentist, much easier to use.
It's better than nothing, but you can't beat mechanical cleaning. A bit like brush car wash vs no touch

As I said mate, for the majority. I have a few patients, no matter what they do they have dental problems and their teeth are in a faster rate of decline than the general population. There are a bunch of factors that can contribute to this (medications that cause dry mouth, naturally low saliva flow, composition and quality of saliva, natural pH in the mouth, various medical conditions that cause the mouth to be more acidic to name a few) which need to addressed to reduce risk but for those people it is frustrating (and for their dentists too!!)
As far as costs are concerned, I have colleagues working in the UK, many of the NHS dentists are now private, one of my ex-associates charges about the same for crowns as I do, but in GBP. Besides I have seen some pretty shoddy NHS dentistry too and my mates that did their OEs working as dentists in England in the late 90s have a similarly low opinion of the general standard of care there. But there are charlatans in all professions and a range of prices too. We are no different

@canefan I reckon a few of them work up here...one my wife goes to is always trying to get her to get cosmetic shit done, telling her she needed this and that, she ended up changing fortunately she has good teeth, hope the kids have hers rather than mine.
Some of the dentists they have for kids are too eagar to extract as well, which causes crowding issues as thier adult teeth come through (learnt with TR Jnr so Miss TR had a spacer)
I dont want to change dentists as I am embarassed by the state of my teeth!

Never settle mate, find someone who doesn't make you feel like you are being sold. For the sake of your remaining teeth you owe it to yourself to find someone responsible. I see lots of people from other dentists (many thru grabone etc too) that want a second opinion for proposed treatment plans. Every time I do an assessment and find they need little or no work done it fucking disgusts me. These days any dentist worth their salt is relatively non-interventionist, especially with kids

@canefan @taniwharugby Dentistry in the UK is really variable too. We have something called Denplan, I'm sure NZ must have something similar. Basically it is an annual assessment of the work required which is then costed out over the year and then the dentist takes on the risk or more work being required. Sounds good no? I had a client that ran a dental castings business and he felt that Denplan was licensed neglect - ie assess for X amount of work and then do fuck all. He mentioned one dentist locally that he felt stuck to the spirit of the thing and luckily it was my dentist (old rugby mate). He's great and not too expensive (I don't use Denplan, Mrs Cato does) but bloody hell I've had some bad motherfuckers too. I look after my teeth pretty well and it costs me around £190 a year for two appointments with the hygienist and then two check ups with my mate. Good value I feel. As an aside we have been talking about replacement of a crown which I'm not that keen on as I don't want all the aggro, costs around £300-£400, so not too bad either.

That system sounds like our dental benefit system for kids of high school age. It is a capitation system based on estimated work done, many dentists try to game the system by trying to push through as many patients as possible that don't need any work and the kids are the ones that lose. I am not on that scheme, I prefer for patients to pay what I deem to be a fair and reasonable fee for me to assess and treat what they need and only what they need. Cosmetic stuff is different, I might suggest, but in the end it needs to be patient driven. 400 quid sounds pretty good, of course you don't know how or where it is made (local, China with depleted uranium containing metals of whatever the fark in it) but it sounds like you have yourself a good un

Rant? I thought it was advertising/marketing.
I've never had a filling in my 40+ years - I must have got lucky because I abused the shit out of lollies/chocolate for years.
Although I may need to get my first filling this year because I've been brushing too hard and have removed some of the part where the gums and teeth meet.

Like I was intimating to TR, genetics my man. I have a mate who is an orthopaedic surgeon, he was saying that it doesn't matter how sporty you are, how much running you do, genetics play a huge part in whether you will need hip or knee replacements or not
