@RoninWC Just looked up the availability of Deep Creek's Pontoon in a Monsoon IPA at First Choice liquor. $150 a case - that's not a displaced decimal point. That's one hundred and fifty dollarydoos.

I suppose part of that is they're 440mL cans, but sweet baby jesus this government is taking the piss.

@antipodean Same for the Brewtiful Haze, way too much but I can't help myself and keep buying the 4 packs at $35.

But say when you compare this to one you would be familiar with, the Bentspoke Sprocket IPA, one of my absolute favourites, at around $25 a 4 pack for 375 ml cans, it isn't too bad as it works out to be $10 for an extra 260 ml.

Okay now that I have put it that way, I find myself slowly muttering to myself trying to justify the additional $10.

But you are spot on, the taxes on these beers is just utterly retarded! Also, I do think some Breweries and local distributors are taking the piss with the pricing.

there are a lot of beers brewed in this country that i would like to drink, but the pricing is out of control.

I love Stone & Wood Pacific Ale, but $75 a carton can get fucked, when i can get Jame Squire Swindlers, or Wild Yaks, that aren't much different, for $50.

Would love to drink Hop Hog's occasionally, but $22 for 4 stubbies? Fuck right off.

Between the taxes and cost to brew, most of these craft beers are just massively over priced. It actually stops me trying most of them, because i am unwilling to fork out when it might be shit.

ha, I remember not long after I arrived in the UK the local offy had a box/carton of Steinlager for £24 (exchange was $3.3 then: $80) and we bought that without batting an eye...asked the owner if he'd get more and he said no, it doesnt sell, and we were like, um, duh!

Oh, I had that a couple of times. Definitely below Ranfurly

Some old NZ beer cans: http://www.canmuseum.com/Search.aspx?PageNo=1&StartRowIndex=1&Brand=&Flavor=66&Volume=&Country=173&Year=&Description=
(Maybe I was thinking of NZ Lager?? But the reviews for it seem too good)

Not Leopard either? Used to be called Hawkes Bay Draft I think

Leopard wasn't HB Draught, as @Bovidae notes it was the regional beer back in the Bay (more highly thought of than the ones being discussed here). HB Draught was the same beer as Canterbury Draught but with a different label.

I think there are two Leopards both from Hawkes Bay

In the 60's Leopard "Continental" Lager was introduced to offer a more refined option for the discerning palate 😉

I think it might have been the first canned beer sold in NZ - certainly remember it being sold in solid "tin" cans with a picture of a south island lake mountains etc and a very obvious seam on the side. Impossible to crush and needed a special can opener

    alt text

Somehow I think it was (weird though this sounds) a JV between Lion and DB.

I believe there was a later craft beer also branded Leopard out of the Hawkes bay
