This is a really dumb game. I struggled to G and ,when faced with a decision of not being able to listen to either Marvin Gaye or Al Green for the rest of my life, gave up.

Yeah great point. Doors, Soundgarden, Snoop Dogg, Rick James, James Brown and many others miss out.

    Xzibit gets in.

    Shit game

whyyyyyyyyyy.......anyone would bother trying to justify being a fan of this tepid and utterly shit group.

I really expect so much more of you @Rocky-Rockbottom

haha, says the guy whose list is any 2 hours of Radio Hauraki from 1997...

I resent that remark. Some of my groups best work is from the late 60s. I even go so far as the mid 2010s

OK, so I was in a boring meeting and had a go. I took it from the point that, according to the rules this would form a collection that had to sustain me forever so some artists have been chosen on the basis of the size and scope of their work, others as 'go to' enjoyment and some as previously unexplored

    Average White Band
    The Beatles
    Sam Cooke
    Dexys Midnight Runners
    Echo and the Bunnymen
    Aretha Franklin
    Marvin Gaye
    Donny Hathaway
    Isley Brothers
    The Jam
    Kool and the Gang
    Bettye Lavette
The Muscle Shoals Swampers (cheating a little here)
    New Order
    Shuggie Otis
    Prince
Quincy Jones (yes it breaks the rules, but I can't come up with anything else)
    Otis Redding
    The Sound
    The The
    The Undertones
    Luther Vandross (struggled here)
    Paul Weller
    XTC
    The Yardbirds
Frank Zappa (just to extend the collection to exploring something new)

    @Rocky-Rockbottom

    You missed the “M.”

Might I politely suggest the Music Machine?

    Bingo.

I figure TSF music threads are mostly populated by music critics of the sort who write occasional reviews for the Guardian, loathe four chord happy pop songs with every ounce of their being, and are triggered by what people actually listen to even more:

    https://www.bbc.com/news/entertainment-arts-43995542

But, for most people, that's irrelevant. There's a reason why the best-selling album in UK chart history is Queen's Greatest Hits; and why second place goes to Abba's Gold.

I almost forgot the replacements too, they were a late change for the Ramones.

This is fucking hard. Here goes. Doesn't reflect my favourite bands. I figure I'm stuck listening to these artists for eternity so I want stuff that I've already listened to for a long while (reflected in the age of the artists) and a variety

    Allman Brothers
    Bowie
    Clash
    Dylan
    Duke Ellington
    Aretha
    Gerschwin
    Billie Holiday
    Iggy
    Janes Addiction
    Fela Kuti
    Mozart
    Nirvana
    O'Jays
    Prince
    Queen
    Stones
    Steely Dan
    Talking Heads
    Peter Urlich
Various Artists 😉 otherwise Velvet Underground
    Stevie Wonder
    XTC
    Neil Young
    Zombies
