Who is the AB's 4th choice at 10?

Forget Cruden. It won't happen.
Super Rugby 2019: Aaron Cruden not part of Chiefs recovery plan
All Blacks legend John Kirwan suggested NZ Rugby should swoop quickly to secure Cruden's services for the rest of the Super Rugby season and the World Cup campaign, but Cooper denies that's an option for the struggling Chiefs. "I don't see that as a foreseeable option," says Cooper. "He's contracted, so we'll look at what we've got among our own group in our region and around the country." The Chiefs' shortage of first-five/fullback cover was further exacerbated over the weekend, when they lost Jack Debreczeni to concussion during their loss to the Lions. Cooper admits that will change his approach to the dual-playmaker role. "[Debreczeni] is not here," says Cooper. "He's still poorly, so once he's stopped having his headaches, he'll go through his protocols.

@rotated will they though? Hansen mentioned that they were only inviting players to the foundation days that were selected last year as to not interupt Super Rugby team selections.
That's the difference. They also said that other players could still make the squad.

@sparky I don't think anyone will have any doubt Mo'unga will re-sign. Our 10-shortage increases his market value though. He's in a good negotiating position.
BB is probably already on top money (in NZ terms), but he's almost 28, so I can see him leave. All NZR can offer him is sabbaticals and out-clauses, so he can do some overseas' stints if he decides to stay. I can't see him re-sign for longer than 2 years tbh.
If I were NZR, I'd do some better scouting (in NZ). Ensure that all young, good & promising first five-eighths playing M10Cup have SR (development) contracts for the next few years, so that there's an adequate pathway for their development. Everyone who's read the Hurricanes thread, knows that that's not the case at the moment. Try converting current young fullbacks, halfbacks or second fives into 10s, at least up to "emergency standard" etc etc. I don't know what NZR are doing at the moment to increase depth, but I have the feeling they could do more.
And here he is - till 2022!
Very important signing!

Weird year for the contract to end - but bloody good.
It has to be said the Crusaders have never really lost a major free agent signing - the NZRU have always come in with a big contract or sabbatical clause to make it happen.

@rotated not really, gives him huge power to re-negotiate if he is a crucial figure leading into the 2023 RWC
Weird for the NZRU to agree for the contract to end that year.

Would be interesting to know where he sits in terms of cash offered on this contract.
In my view, the only people I might offer more are Retallick and Beauden (who checking their ages I see were born four days apart in a good week for NZ rugby back in 1991).

According to Dave Rennie, Aaron Cruden is not going to Glasgow.
If Glasgow Warriors supporters had started dreaming about what life might be like with the former All Black Aaron Cruden running the show at Scotstoun in the coming years, then now is the time to wake up.
Cruden, a protege and friend of Glasgow coach Dave Rennie and the subject of all sorts of chat linking him with a move from Montpellier to Scotland, will not be playing his rugby for the Warriors next season. "He's not coming," said Rennie.
"There was a lot of speculation around Aaron and has been for a long period of time. I'm constantly talking to him. I know him well and we're pretty close. I'd love him to join us. I think he'd be great around educating our young 10s, Adam [Hastings] and Brandon [Thomson], but he's not coming."

@rotated I think they'd have agreed to almost any contract duration up to 2023. It's not like we're stacked with test quality first fives ...
But you never actually know what is around the corner.
Yes there are guys that make Age grade rep teams, but who actually kicks on and then gets picked is still unknown.

Hayden Parker not available until 2021 either:
-
Josh Ioane for sure, way ahead of Cameron. I think he is 23 now so next five or six years likely to be his optimum years so give him some exposure now. Seems to be growing into his role nicely for the Highlanders, step up in game pressure against Canada or Namibia would be ideal start for him
-
@Nevorian Maybe try him against the Argies during the Rugby Championship, but I wouldn't let him take a spot in the RWC squad that could be used for a more versatile impact player. They could keep him on stand-bye in case the worst happens (to BB or RM).

And another one gone..........................
Highlanders No 10 Bryn Gatland ruled out for six months

"Jordie Barrett rules out first-five option for All Blacks"
does not equal
"At an absolute pinch [I can play there] but no, I'm not a 10."
Emergency backup for Mo'unga vs Namibia or Canada - that's an absolute pinch.
Not saying he is going to be in the plans but a better headline would be
"Jordie Barrett says he could be a first-five option for All Blacks if they were fucking desperate"
