My Turn ... Running Down A Dream
-
@SammyC @MajorRage you guys are harsh haha sorry just saw this thread but yeah, I run 3-4 marathons a year in much quicker times than 6 hours (not trying to blow my own trumpet) but yeah, credit to them for giving it a go and a lot of them are also very old (70+). I know I'd be a happy man if I was still doing that distance at that age!

Nothing but respect for the older guys who still do it.
Not sure I agree about those who are just clearly unconditioned (read , FAT) and think doing it in 7:45 means they can say they did the London marathon.
-
@MajorRage Yup I see your point but even so, 42km for someone unconditioned is a hell of a lot of pain to go through haha. I've done a couple of marathons carrying a bit of weight and I was definitely hurting for a while afterwards haha lesson learnt after that.

Messy couple of weeks with my olds turning up and then an unplanned trip to Europe for a meeting and a piss up ... Not to mention my apple watch then turning to shit and giving me some complete crap data wise!
Tuesday - 6km, 33:27, 5:31pace
Friday - 6.1km, 34:54, 5:41 pace ... worst run in ages
Saturday - 12.7km 1:11:30, 5:39 paceOnly 24k that week - bit disappointed, but just wasn't feeling it for most of the week. Sunday I wanted to do another 5km to get to 30, but decided sod it, take a breather and push for some distance on Monday.
Monday - 10km, 56 mins, 5:35 pace ... apple watch come back with a crock so this is purely an estimate.
Wednesday - 5.9km, 33:21, 5:40 pace
Thursday - 5km 25:50, 5:10 pace
Sunday - 10.1km 53:42, 5:19 paceSo 31km over 4 distinctly different runs. Monday, after the previous rotten week pushed a bit harder and felt pretty good, only to get back and have my watch telling me 11.5km at 4:53 pace .. that didn't happen. I know where I turned around tho, so I'll get an accurate measurement and see where it was. Wednesday, I came back last Tuesday night from work, then played 18 holes golf before going for this run, so against those headwinds, I was pretty happy. Thursday felt good so went for pace, Sunday same thing.
This week ...
I think it's time for a loooong one this weekend. Not done one in a while. So perhaps looking at 6km Tuesday, 6km Thursday, 16-19km Saturday and then a short warm down on Sunday to shake it all out.

That reflects my experience as well. You can run all you want. It won't affect your weight. You have to do that with diet.

The old saying that you don’t lose weight in the gym, you lose weight in the kitchen is generally a truism I find. Though for me nutrition and exercise is the key. Shame that I don’t really like either option that much.
-
@Catogrande you only get 3 months of summer here too, at which point you don’t really want to be knocking back social events. Although it’s a great time for exercise.
Fit and fat. It’s the new fit and healthy.
-
Fasting!! I tell ya it works a treat! And I am definitely cut from similar cloth to you guys in that weight loss has never really been my thing. But I can bulk like a mofo ha ha.
My previous approach was eat the same or a bit less and try and do a LOT more exercise. The new approach is working waaaay better.

Could this have something to do with lots of running = lots of hunger = more eating = no change.

In the running community we say "You can't outrun your diet"
I am also in the fasting camp. But also counting calories. Works a treat. But yeah its a bit of a ball ache to track it all. And yeah you need to knock back most social activities.

Tues 7.4 km, 6:03 pace
Thurs 5.8km, 5:16 pace
Sat 18 km, 5:33 pace (1:40)Tuesday meant to leave backpack at work but forgot so had to run with it. Really messes up your rhythm in s Big way. And killed my shoulders too. They were sore, but in a nice way the next day.
Thursday run was great, solid pace, very strong.
Saturday was my first real distance run in a while. Same as last long run, muscles and breathing rock solid. But knees were quite sore. However, still did a full day of things after it so no lasting effects.
Going to up it to aim for 32k p/ week in June.

@MajorRage
Don't forget to practise eating and drinking on those long runs get your body used to it. Small sips and nibble you way through a banana or something. So many people never practise this then get cramps trying to do it on race day. -
Some pricks have a great metabolism, the rest of us have to figure what works through trial and error and go with that. I'm not 100% strict on the fasting but I do beat myself up a bit if I succumb to eating before 12pm. Make no mistake, anyone who says Breakfast is the most important meal of the day has shares in Kellogs. There is ample proof that this is complete bullshit.

I occasionally use running gels as well, although I find them far too sickly and they make me feel ill.
Have never tried to eat a banana whilst running ... however will be done on my next long one.

while running i use these. Black Cherry are pretty good because they aren't sweet.

On the bike i use the gels, but have found flavours that aren't too sweet (apple, watermelon and mint, cola). Race day will be a mix of gels on teh bike, bloks on the run
