Electric vehicles going a bit petrol orientated .. completely my fault. So I thought I'd start this for fellow motoring enthusiasts (if any)

@SammyC - out of interest have you driven the newer model 6cyl? The reviews on them seem quite mixed, with pundits preferring the M2. I never really warmed to the coupe in the E90 and would have bought the 4D instead (I almost did - had a 335i at one point). Continues on for me with the current M4. Not a fan at all, would buy the M3 instead.
Actually, I'd probably buy the newer S4 instead.

@MajorRage The latest B58 six cylinder is a beautiful thing. I have had a an SAV with one since the beginning of the year in NZ, where such cars make much more sense than in the UK IMO. It’s got great performance, reasonable economy (TBH not something I care that much about, so long as the range is decent) and it sounds fantastic - crackles and pops on the overrun, barks on the downshift and wastegate dumps under hard acceleration. When the S58 version comes out at the end of the year I’ll likely be swapping.

A good mate recently bought the C63 AMG mentioned in the other thread and you're right, it sounds fantastic. He keeps chopping and changing having had two 911s, an Aston V8 and a Jaguar F Type in the last four years prior to the Merc and he says he loves this one the best.
Mind you he is an absolute shit driver.

SAV?
I had the 135i on the previous generation engine to this and I'd still argue it's the best engine I've had in any car that I've owned. Loads of power, nice noise & unbelievably refined. Too powerful for that car tho. One of my in-laws had a brand new 140i on loan and came to the same conclusion. Shit loads of fun, but hard to get the best out of it as the traction control pretty much so drives the thing, and when you turn it off it's an absolute handful.
As for making more sense in NZ .. with the hills etc, yes indeed. Although it's a much easier, safer and less likely to give your wallet and driving license points a hammering when using them (as designed) in the UK.

I've got a simliar mate to that. His last few cars reads SLK 350, CLK 500, 335i, M5, C63 AMG, X5M, 996 Turbo, RS6. He tends to buy them quite old, drive them for a bit then get bored really quickly. On the whole though, I don't think he enjoyed the C63 that much.

Not an MB guy, so no idea of what the equivalent of Adaptive M suspension is, but sounds like it was badly lacking it.

Wife’s colleague has that. He loves it. I don’t buy why you need that 0-100 5sec and handling in that car, but I don’t argue it! I have the 30d x5 which at 6.5 to 100 is as fast as I want!

I hear you on the risks UK vs NZ. But it seems like everyone here has a SUV, SAV or ute so if you’re in a car your visibility past them is bugger all, so you’re better off going with the flow I’ve found. I’ve also got a Nissan GT-R in the garage but I almost never take it out now. The visibility is terrible and when every other vehicle on the road is a Ford Ranger it’s not much fun.
Best engine I’ve every had is the V10 in the E60 M5 that I still have in the UK, owned it since new in 2008. No great torque to speak of at the low end but it revs to over 8500rpm. I took it through the Western Scheldt tunnel a couple of years ago and it sounded like the world was ending, marvellous. I’ve also got an F90 M5 Competition that I picked up from Munich early this year. Much, much faster than the old one but nowhere near as much character.

@JC impressive. Modern gt-r or older?
A friend just sold his 2016 m5 for a focus rs. He said in the UK it just makes much more sense for the driving he does. He never really goes far so I buy his POV.

I have the last of the V8 S5 ABT and am very happy with it. Driving set-up is sensational. Great sound never been able to get anywhere near the top end though run out of road way too soon. Did Taupo to Napier earlier this year but whilst I did open her up a little there was too much traffic to really see what it does. Plus TBH I'm just not a good enough driver to really take advantage through the corners.

i always wanted an Audi, but now i live in the tropics. I've got mates who have owned them, and they just can't handle the climate here, shit is just constantly wearing or breaking. And it's expensive.

I worked in auto industry and parts & service for a couple decades. Biggest joke in the garages were young guys with a few dollars in their pockets who buy the shiny used toy they’ve always wanted (esp. BMW, Audi, Porsche, Mercedes) after warranties have expired and parts need replacing. They’ll bitch about the price of economy-brand oil filters, which last 8000 km for the price of a couple rolls of toilet paper, they’ll still want it cheaper and leave complaining. Keep reaching for the stars, but keep your feet planted firmly on the ground. Your wallet will thank you. Champagne tastes and all they gots is beer money (barely).
