this, right here, is an essential part of any good coffee experience.

Just for the sake of clarity, by shit hot I mean she is an amazingly good barista.

    Two things:

    1. I don't believe you, and
    2. Are you assuming gender?

Working around Wellington there’s a lot of choices for decent coffee so the barista is an decent part of deciding where I get my flat white from . Last place I worked had a hot American chick working there , all was good till she told me one day she’d gone from vegetarian to vegan . She got a job at a vegan cafe and her boss took over for a while he looked for another barista which was ok because he was a good sort . I can’t even begin to describe the horror of walking in one day to find her full time replacement was a hipster with a man bun .

@Stockcar86 have you ever tried Kopi Luwak ?

I was in Indo a couple of years ago and went to the place that they "farm" it. It was a civet shit (actually it was alright but really just made famous and expensive by the movie I think).

Yes, it was pretty disappointing. It was really mild tasting. A lot of the bitterness, but also the complexity and interestingness you get from a good coffee had gone.

Like the DB export of coffee beans.

If you have spent your life drinking Nescafe gold then it probably tastes magic. To me, nowhere worth the cost, and I would not drink it again by choice.

I also got a "dirty" - shot of espresso, cold milk, and a shot of espresso pulled differently on top. I hate milk in my coffee, but this rocked

i bought a stove top/moka pot and grind my own beans(yes i know what i said) best thing is its not a expesso .i good machine costs a bomb and cheap ones are shit.pot cost about $100 stainless steel they are now over$200 grinder cost more than the pot.and i can have an expesso when im out.

We were on stove top moka - really simple and easy, and half decent coffee.

Have now moved over to a ROK Presso. Basically a very simple hand pull - double lever action. Makes a decent espresso with a solid crema, fast and easy to use. Only a couple of hundy too. We use ours about 20x a week easy, and have relegated our moka pots to the back of the cupboard.

    Presso

404 Page Not Found - Presso

Edit: also great for travelling/camping, as all yo uneed is hot water. Very portable.

Got one of these - a thing of beauty; copper and chrome

    Finally my specialist subject...

. Georgia cafe does a decent pour over filter coffee (and has just started offering bottomless batch brewed filters), so if I am in town I try one of those. They are supposed to be opening up their own roastery in Onekawa by the end of the year, so will need to check that out.

Do you know Benny? He’s a top bloke. When I was retired I used to go into Georgia every day but now I’m working out of Hastings I hardly ever get there. Artisan in Hastings is good. The owner roasts all her own beans and they have a lady barista who is shit hot.

Have you had Horny Goat? Is it any good?

All this talk about the Bay has me craving Rush Munros!

    Ok, you have me interested.

Horny Goat is about 200m away from where I’m working. Great when it’s raining because you can drive through. Coffee is pretty good, comparable to Wild Bean. Surprisingly pricey though. They have excellent milkshakes.

There are some truly great coffee places in the Bay. Hawthorne, Wright and Co in Havelock, Mylk, Artisan, Little Black Bird, Aurum, Cupple/Ya Bon and Cascara in Hastings, Six Sisters, Georgia, Empire Coffee Roasters, Source, Crazy Good, Morena, and Picnic in Napier. And of course Bay Espresso everywhere.

Just had one the other day in Bali. Was OK, nothing exceptional and luckily was free on the breakfast menu where we stayed.
I will probably change my coffee habit back in NZ but in London would make two short blacks to knock back before riding to work for the caffeine boost then have a flat white (ish) at work. Usually stop there but sometimes one more.
Had a really good Italian domestic machine that I brought in Oz that lasted about 12 years. You could get a good shot from it when you learned it’s ways but it was also a single boiler machine with no pressure release which meant that you had to let steam off between coffees.
Upgraded to a nice “prosumer” compact machine. Same head group as a commercial machine and double boiler (so you can steam and express at same time). Makes a great cup with freshly ground beans, even better if beans freshly roasted. The difference in how well it works is really noticeable. Have a small burr grinder that is a bargain if anyone wants one. It’s a bodum one. Only around a hundy NZ. Takes up hardly any bench space.
Will be waiting on the shipping to catch us up so will probably go for pour over in the meantime.

One of my old school mates owns the Horny Goat, but for some reason I never make it there when I'm back.

I've been to a few of those, I've always liked Bay Espresso, at least at the original Waipatu one. I'll make a note of the other ones for my next trip back.

Most mornings I have a pre workout just after waking before I go to gym so anywhere from 300mg to 800mg of caffeine. Means I typically don’t drink a lot of coffee in the day, usually only one mid morning.

Weekends usually have a couple, breakfast and mid morning at kids rugby or cricket

@Crucial First had Kopi Luwak 20 years or so ago and gain within the last 5. Like everyone else don't get it. It's a mild pretty flavourless coffee. What's the point?

Evert tried the coffee fruit itself? I'm told its bloody good - as is carob apparently. I get dried coffee fruit husks and make tea from them. Really good and you can leave a pot on the go all day as it doesn't stew.

I used to do the full on triple shot expresso for years but now I have a flat white at 6.00 am on the way to work. Get a second at the weekends and a couple of times a week at work. Quite a come down as I used to be a 15 cups a day guy.

I remember listening to a programme on sports doping years ago which explained the caffeine hit - which is something I have never experienced. Apparently a small minority of people have a gene which means they store the caffeine in their system rather than immediately access it. These people never feel any effects from coffee and ironically are the ones who should limit consumption the most. Oh well just add it to the list of over indulged drugs.

I have a habit of going to Taste Auckland drinking too much and walking out with the latest food accessory - BBQ, micro-brewery etc. Few years back I bought two double boiler Italian Expresso machines. I hardly ever (maybe half dozen times a year) use mine as I already get up at 5:30 and I resent the extra ten minutes it would take. But damn it looks fine as a very expensive gleaming chrome industrial art piece on my kitchen bench.
