New-look Otago side for Log defence

New-look Otago side for Log defence

Changes galore. Otago coach Ben Herring has had to tinker with his pack big time ahead of the Ranfurly Shield defence against Manawatu at Forsyth...

Dylan Nel returns at No 8 and Slade McDowall will start ahead of James Lentjes, who is carrying a niggly neck complaint but will take a spot on the bench regardless.

Blindside flanker Adam Thomson is the only reassuring presence.

There is just one change to the backline. Captain and fullback Michael Collins gets his first start for the season, which means Vilimoni Koroi will have to make an impact as a substitute.

Herring said Latta's neck injury was not serious.

Apparently Manawatu hold the record for the longest drought for holding the log of wood...

    Manawatu - 41 years.
    Northland - 40 years
    BOP - 15 years
    NH - 15 years
    Auckland - 11 years

    and just for you @Chris-B
Ta$man - however long they have been in existence 🎣

Is that between holding the log of wood. Because since we're discussing amalgamated teams that @Chris-B supports then Nelson Bays had nearly 40 years of existence without ever holding the log of wood. Both Nelson and Golden Bay-Motueka never won the shield either. So can we combine them all together: 134 years. 1885 - 2019.

I assume Thompson is injured? At this level a midfield of Laumape and Thompson would be devastating.

    @Nepia @taniwharugby

    134?

Coincidentally, that's exactly the number of points we've scored this year against the two teams contending for the Unfairly Shield this weekend.

They might as well have a shield made out of a wooden toilet seat for all it symbolizes these days.

To paraphrase Trump, "Very sad"! πŸ™‚

This is a decent Friday night game in a comp where some of the scheduling leaves a lot to be desired. Although had Otago lost the Shield to Southland it'd be a different story.

Don't blame me for the vagaries of the NPC draw and how that effects Shield challenges. Your Assembled International XV will get a shot one day.

Both these teams should be in the Heartland competition.

Not while bunny teams hold the Shield.

First round of picks are by the premiership teams in reverse seeding order - for a championship team home game. The worst performing Premiership team picks the shield holder.

Second round of picks is by championship teams for championship home games - the shield holder picks the weakest available premiership team.

    It is a fucked system.

Surprising that none of those droughts are as long as the 43 years that several teams have racked up without winning the NPC First Division.

M4L doesn't need to worry of course - his team has only racked up 42 years.

Here's all the possible Ranfurly Shield games this season, I did a video talking about where I think it will go for my supporters.

I mentioned the possible routes not the improbable. You need the Poo to win for that scenario, and hope Northland beat Canterbury.

Anyone else think Laumape and Hemopo should be playing given they’re not likely to get game time next week against Tonga?
