@Duluth I just assumed you meant NH would have to merge into Northland, which I didnt see any problems with...I mean having 2 teams seperated by a silly little bridge is, well, silly.

Nah you would keep the name, the history, the uniform and in return you just need to give up the home ground

I’d happily take the name North Auckland back. We were historically better then. One of NZs best during the 60/70’s.. Now look at us.

@Duluth Why have you included HB in your more defensive comment? It is pretty obvious you were referring to a merger between The 'Poo, Wanganui and Taranaki into one unit to be called Central Vikings hence no reason for HB supporters to become involved.

I bet you did! Stockcar86 and I were in attendance at Okara Park when the ground announcer took great pride in reading the ever increasing score in your guys favour as Northland all on its own 37 The Combined Manawatu-Hawkes Bay Team 10 that Friday night way back in 1997. Come to think of it he announced every score change in the same manner! The final score got to something around the fifty mark for the home side and the combined side scrambled a miniscule 13. The final later in the season, also at Okara Park, was given a miss and from memory it was an even greater pounding in the favour of Northland - all on it's own!

I reckon Canterbury country would beat Southland. A shame the crfu don’t do more for country rugby in Canterbury. So much talent out there. We are a victim of our own success.

I made a table of finishing positions for some of the teams
The teams are the old yo-yo teams of the 1990's, plus Manawatu and Otago
The start date is when the NPC format changed (2011)
The teams were listed from 1-14 after the round robin. Yes I know that's not fully correct as there are two divisions.. its just a rough guide

Why? They are a former yo-yo team, not a SR base and a population similar to other lesser teams.
Northland and Otago are the sides that have not been in the 1st division
Otago deserve more criticism than they get
Southland's decline seems steady. Prior to 2011 they had some very good seasons too

When Naki were part of the Canes they always had a high number of Super players as they were the 'preferred' 2nd province (obviously a wee bit of bitterness in there but this is fact) and I think their association with the Chiefs has ensured they've continued to have a high number.

Is that correct? I think the actual change was the AirNZ Cup in 2006. Before that was the old 1st/2nd Div. Obviously I remeber this as it was when the Magpies were quite good (regular quarter and semi finalists) - pre the idiot coach from Canterbury days.

The current format started in 2011
In 2010 it was 1 big division
