Sorry it was Connolly not Deans.

I don't doubt Deans was making his way around the country chipping away at Ted and co at the time though, which could be the cause of confusion.

Fair call though, like it was one that was flagged by many at the time as being a bit of a worry - much like Kaino at lock.

SA wingers like to "roll the dice" on defence by rushing up to prevent the ball getting wide.

always been a tactic of SA teams, especially in that period when Jean De Villiers played, maybe Rassie is trying to bring intercepting back.

    Habana also.

I think the difference here and what I’ve noticed is they diagonal in rather than the way Habana would keep to his space and then pounce.

I remember when the ABs played the Wallabies a few years back Melbourne and Deans was coaching OZ and Henry selected Mauger at 12 and Lucky Luke at 13. Deans held a presser and after saying it was a surprising selection he pointed out that Luke likes to lead in one side when defending leaving the outside exposed. And sure enough the Wallabies exploited it during the match.

Sometimes it’s mind games and sometimes it’s actually real based on hours of video watching.

Was that the one where Mauger kicked out on the full so they had a midfield lineout that they worked the move where McAlister was beaten on the huge inside? πŸ™‚

I wonder when the ABs last fielded a side, numbers 6 to 15, lighter than for this team

I doubt there's been a team this millennium - might have to go back pre-Jonah and pre-Justin Marshall.

I guess the size of our backs isn't a huge concern in this game, because South Africa don't have any huge munters either - but, I'll be a bit concerned at size disparities if we come up against England with people like Tuilagi and Cokanasiga.

Horses for courses. SBW and Ioane might be more appealing if we go into such a match.

@ACT-Crusader I also wonder if the game plan and personnel for this game v SA would differ if we meet them in the final....

This backline wasn't big, apart from Joe. 2003 vs France.

    A nice gesture.

The Springboks will have an image of Chester Williams embedded in their jersey numbers -- the nation's iconic 1995 World Cup winner who inspired a new generation of black players to take up rugby.

listening to a clip from an interview with Goodhue earlier, it seems his hammies are still tight, reckons he should be right for next match....said all good running but over the ball at rucks they arent 100%.

I think Shag & co are holding back. Sure we've fielded our strongesr team for the pool match, but odds are we will meet the Bokke again at the pointy end....
Tight hammys and sore shoulders - not sure I buy into all that hotspah.
Would like to see how we go with BBBR, Goodhue, Todd and Rieko. Would have really liked to see how Jacobson went in this match - but ah not to be.

Retallick and arguably peak Rieko would strengthen the team, not sure about Goodhue and Todd though. Todd would be too lightweight for the Boks IMO.

@mofitzy_ If Frizzell gets on, lets hope he has a blinder.
Lookingat the Japan/Russia game where the Japanese seemed to fare better in the conditions - wonder if our more lightweight pack will findd it easier in the humidity, rather than heavier boks and gym bunnies England. We shall see tomorrow. I wouldn't put another draw out of the question. Would make the pool more interesting for sure.

I still don't believe that Hansen is out on either Smith/Ioane as much as many think, nor is he married to Reece and a lesser extent Bridge.

Auckland was good, but maybe because of their style or the regularity with which we play them but Shag does seem to not rate Australia as being an acid test the same way he would RSA.

@rotated Yeah - I'd say anyone who doesn't play well in the midfield or outside backs could potentially give up their spot with the exception of Beauden.

I think the only guys who are not really contending for a spot in the match 23 (barring injury) are Moli, Coltman, Weber - and possibly Jordie.

@voodoo Beauden Barrett going to wing isn’t a waste and is not unprecedented. But I think Ben is insurance but will provide good spark for 15-20.

I dunno, I'd say BB at wing for the last 15 would be a bit of a waste, I think even if they left RM out there they'd shift BB into playmaker as much as possible. I'd want the ball in his hands as much as possible running at tired oppo in the last 15
