I thought there 2 decisions that went our way in the first half, the forward pass and the missed knock-on. They happened pretty close to each other, and just as we were really starting to get momentum on the park and the scoreboard - not saying they caused the momentum because neither led directly to anything of substance, but the timing made it worse. Aside from that, I don't think we got any rub of the green, the rest was fairly balanced with a few arguments from both sides for unclear offenses.

where is the missed knock on? i recall one that seemed it but after watching it numerous times last night it wasn't. Was a poor pass that hit Skuds/B Smith?? foot before he picked it up? They shot to Cheika and he was having a bit of a tanty but it wasn't a knock on. Is that the one?

I cannot recall referee decisions getting anywhere near the attention they attract now in post match arguments with the mates in years gone by.

We focused mostly on things like Scott-bloody-Johnson kicking away too much good ball, why Roebuck wasn't used more and the lunatic action / sensational effort by Campesi. What Peter Marshall, John McCarthy or Stuart Dickinson (or Gordon Bray in lower grades) had done out in the middle truly was incidental.

The one around halfway, centre-field? I watched it a few times, couldn't be conclusive, then went with initial reaction of probably lost forward. Happy to accept otherwise though, now we are down to just 1 decision that went our way...

Indeed, what became clear in hindsight was that we were the better team in all knockout games and controlled all of them to a large degree,

Stuff I just realised, which may already have been mentioned about this final:

1) Most tries scored in a RWC final (5)

2) Most tries scored by the losing side in a RWC final (2)

3) Equal highest score by the losing side in a RWC final (17 - both Australia) but most points in regular time by the losing side

4) Equal highest number of tries by the winning side (3 - both NZ)

Just short of highest score and biggest margin.

yeah same one. Definitely inconclusive...one of those i reckon you can read whatever you want into depending on your bias. Anyway i looked at it a number of times and it was messy but convinced it wasn't a knock on and NO is right there and let it run.

Man reading this thread was more exhausting than watching the game!

Don't get all the angst over the refereeing decisions although maybe I would if I was an Aussie. Certainly there's a fair bit of angst over at GGR.

So big ups to Aussie posters here for staying classy.

Both teams conducted themselves well post match. I can't imagine how much it hurts to lose a final. Shame some supporters from both nations couldn't follow suit.

Did the team's mix after the match and have a few beers or are they still not friendly does anyone know?

    From voodoo's post:

Speaking of obstruction, I hate the rule for a kick chase where a defender only has to "not deviate" his line to be legal. This is so daft. Watch Mitchell size up the Savea line on a kick chase, then run "straight" into his way to prevent him challenging for the ball. Mitchell was running at 45 degrees from where the ball was going to land with zero intention of challenging for it - perfectly legal, just a daft rule

Is this really the rule now?

Mitchell's run was not anywhere near a straight line to the ball. He angled in at about 45 degrees and intercepted Savea about 5 to 10 m from where the ball landed/was caught.

I had this as 1 of 2 clear penalties missed in the phase in lead up to our forward pass penalty. So swings and roundabouts and all that etc.

Do I have to revise my opinion? Please tell me 'no'.

Issues:

1) Average overall height of Australia listed as 6'

BUT

2) Average height of Forwards is listed as 5'9" (despite none of them being that short)

3) Average height of backs 5'5"

So unless I'm reading that completely wrong, or there is another rugby position outside "forwards" and "backs" that isn't represented, I'd suggest this data was assembled by someone unfamiliar with mathematics.
