Anything not behind a firewall is going to be a bit shit as you are fighting for eyeballs with clickbait shit. Its why the Mail Online is so succesful, its mostly shots of starlets falling out of bars. But its not competing with news, its competing with The Superficial or Cracked.

The other option is you stop paying your journalists & basically become a blog - as Huffpo & Stuff have done. So the opinions & news is at the same level as you'll get from anyone on here.

If you want actual decent quality reporting on anything you have to pay for it. Economist, FT, NYT are all good.

Having said that, their coverage of the Charlie Hebdo massacre was disgraceful. "Free speech is very important, unless someone might be interfering with business, then it is a worthless, juvenile value!"

They are playing a very different tune now.

I cancelled my (academic discount) subscription after that, you'll be extremely relieved to know.

Still 1000x better than the fucking Economist.

I see today's latest hatchet job is on dairy farmers , on breakfast tv someone was interviewed about the TV clip last night and the interviewer kept brining up none of the bad treatment of the calves was actually by the farmers she was brushed off every time .

The piston wristed gibbon who started this campaign said he wants to hurt Fonterra not the farmers, I'm not sure hoe that works .

yeah I cant believe anyone with a brain doesn't realize the process behind how cows produce milk...

But I see there is further reports that it was local farmers that dobbed that guy in, so much for it being a widespread problem, but I guess that doesn't suit the agenda. The chick on TV1 this morning asked him if he thought they should stop milking altogether and he said yes as there are plenty of alternatives out there - what, like goat, yak and camel milk ;)

Thing that gets me, is usually these kinds of things are done as shortcuts to save a few $$$, but there would seem some of these are just being a cock and cruel cos they can, so you'd think it is more likely isolated than widespread.

Pretty much there's a market for bobby calves too so I'm surprised they get treated so badly . My old man is getting more and more of them as he gets older as they are less of a hassle than sheep . Saves having to take his cows down the road to the bull , last time we did that another bull ran through a fence and nailed his cows one by one in the middle of a road . The best part was we blocked traffic for quite a while, including a school bus full of kids on a nature trip to the river who got a biology lesson they wouldn't have forgotten in a hurry.

When looking for information about Jonah's memorial on the Herald mobile site I found an article about a house being sold at Auckland and the guy didn't get as much as he wanted for it. No shit, it was what the article was about. He made a capital gain of course but he got a few hundred thousand less than what he wanted and it warranted an article. WTF.

No link sorry because why would I direct people towards that.

I read that and liked reading it. He turned down $1.9m as he thought it was worth $2m and it had a CV of $1.125m. So he did a $1 reserve on trade me and only got $1.5m

It was a great story on how greed can get the better of you.

That's an interesting way, some might say generous way of interpreting that article (I did chuckle at that too) - which I don't think was the intention of the writer. ;)
