Greatest Test ever played. Australia Vs New Zealand, Sydney 2000.

I would argue this game was it's equal South Africa Vs New Zealand, Pretoria 1996, meant even more as it was the first AB series win in South Africa after so many heart breaks.

@No-Quarter that was the return leg...

IMO both those games the better team lost in the end.

    Agree

In terms of Tests not involving the All Blacks:

1990 Scotland beating England at Murrayfield in a tense Grand Slam decider.

2003 RWC Final. England winning it with a last minute drop goal at the end of extra time

Japan beating the Boks in the last minute in 2015 RWC:

    You guys are so young.

26 posts and not one mention of THE greatest test match ever played:

1981 3rd Test ABs v Springboks Eden Park

    Flour bombs
    Spectacular tries
    Brute force
    Pseudo championship of the world
    Massive comeback
    Controversy
    Bad Allan Hewson
    Great Allan Hewson

    @mariner4life I protest.

A booboo is more subtle and nuanced than just not reading a thread.

It is to respond to a post immediately without checking if the point had been made subsequent thereto. You can assume I have (usually) read up to that point...

(The other meaning is of course 'to go to bed in order for New Zealand to take a wicket'.)

    And anyway, I was right.

Also, before my time, 1956 4th Test ABs v Boks Eden Park 11-5

In which Peter Jones was absolutely buggered.

France's series in South Africa in 1958. Two match series if I'm correct. Immortalised in the book 'The Great Fight of the French XV'.

@taniwharugby yeah, actually there are a couple of France away games that were awesome. That 2004 one was great for a number of reasons. Then there is one a couple of years later where we hosed them as well, i remember Mils cutting them up.

Was the 2004 one where we just destroyed their scrum?

Yep, epic away games against the Frogs in 2004 (Norm Maxwell, Ma'a Nonu, Collins and So'oialo, DC at 10), 2006 (pumping them in Lyon) and 2009 (pumping them in (Marseille, with Tialata destroying their scrum, Cory Jane's classic "don't argue").

I get a vibe of "Great Test Match" = one where we smashed the opposition.

Don't want to get all Justin Marshall on it but i think we need to think outside our All Black bubble.

So going to throw in 1987 Semi Final Aus v France.

In fact I think there was a series of brilliantly written articles on the greatest games of the RWC on the TSF front page. Search "Best of RWC" 🙂

Scotland v England in 1989? Clash for the 5N Grand Slam and Triple Cown. Stanger scored the Scotties' try.

England v Aus on the northern tour of 1988.

It was like 4 tries to 3 (huge in those days).

    Carling captain.

England just about likeable. Thankfully they ruined that over he following years.

Stuart Barnes at 10 ( when we didn't know he was a dick), Guscott 12, and England running the ball.

It (the RWC 2011 final) wasn't a great game to watch, but the pressure was immense.

The back of my sofa still has my teeth marks.

    In no particular order....

3rd Test 1977 Lions. Brains v brawn with an out-muscled AB team totally out-thinking and outsmarting the opposition.

Ellis Park 2013. Intensity, skill levels, physicality, Owen's reffing, the respect between the two team....

    ABs v Scotland 1st Test 1996. Cullen's 3 tries, Gregor Townsend's try, the Jocks scoring 31 points.

Ireland at Lansdowne Rd in 2013. About 30 phases of play 30 seconds from full time ending in Crotty's try & Cruden's conversion to win the game. Not the greatest of games but the most satisfying ending.

Ellis park 2013 best in recent memory

For purely endings alone 2013 Lansdowne and Bled 3 2014 (I think - Fekitoa try, slade conv).

Best rugby game attended was 2002, England vs AB's at twicks. We lost, but came back from 31-13 down to almost nick it. Sat with a fantastic group of English rugby guys who represented every single thing that is good about England rugby.

It was in 1990. And has already been suggested.
