so what did the Lions do wrong?

Too many games in Joburg or did the names confuse the schedulers?

Bloody disappointing if you ask me.
Firstly only 3 tests. (Yes, I know this seems to be the new norm, but it still sucks).
Then Joburg gets 2 of the 3 tests. That's a real up-yours to the rest of the rugby mad country.

Bloemfontein, Port Elizabeth, Durban... you guys don't count apparently. Bad luck.

If I was SA rugby, I would definitely have scheduled one test in Bloemfontein.
For a British team, there is no more hostile stadium to play at in SA. Atmosphere is like the Boer War took place just yesterday. Bloody awesome 😉

@Billy-Webb that's pretty poor. My mate went to Bloemfontein to watch a test. Said he felt quite vulnerable wearing his ABs gear

Look, the Bloemies crowd is pretty intense, but they're a great bunch before and after the game.
Tons of respect for the AB's in particular in those parts. If anyone values the rivalry, it's those Boers.

Every other nation will get some heat from them during the game, but nothing like the Poms or Brits will get.
There is not an Afrikaner that wont tell you about the concentration camps on match day...
Probably my favourite venue in SA to watch us play the Brits or Poms though. Shame it is not on the cards for this BIL's tour.

@Billy-Webb I don't think he was ever in danger. But the crowd is so combative and passionate, why would you not want the Lions to have to face that?

I ABSOLUTELY want the Lions to face that.
And I would want to be there for it!

Good idea if it can happen.

An AB Vs the B&I Lions at Twickenham or Cardiff could be a massive money-maker.

Its more to do with the arrogance of the Cape Crusaders supporters we have in SA.

@Bones If the first B&I Lions game in SA is on 3 July 2021, that B&I Lions v ABs test would have to take place in June. Whether it's possible, will depend on the 2021 Super Rugby schedule. Assuming the SR Final will be in June, you have to wonder whether the ABs would be able to field their strongest team and have sufficient preparation time.

All depends, of course, also on the COVID19 pandemic and its aftermath.

While it might be the biggest gate and TV earner for a single game, I can't see that the amount of revenue from that one game will do much overall. Nowhere near enough. £8M maybe gate receipts plus the TV rights, less costs of staging the game. So a good few £M but with the RFU suggesting a loss of revenue of around £50M and the Aussies in dire straits by all accounts, this seems like a drop in the ocean. Also being over a year away, will it even be in time to be financially relevant?

@Catogrande yeah might as well not do it eh! Probably no point in working this week as the relative amount of money isn't really worth it when I look at the mortgage.

I agree that we might as well not do it, but coming from a different perspective. If the match doesn't go ahead, we've still drawn with the ABs. I'll take that!

July 15 (Reuters) - The British and Irish Lions tour to world champions South Africa will stick to its July/August 2021 schedule, organisers confirmed in Wednesday, ensuring it will overlap with the Tokyo Olympic Games.

South African Rugby had previously spoken about the possibility of moving the tour to later in the year if a new global rugby calendar was agreed.

By massive. You mean same size as 2017.

    Which is a good result.
