@Kirwan @Baron-Silas-Greenback It's not the topics under discussion so much as the repetitive tone. Reading four days in one hit I was struck by a) how negative it all was probably because b) it was almost exclusively about how Cindy has destroyed the economy. This was presented as fact, but that's not (yet) accurate.
Again as one marathon read it did have the feel of some of the politics threads and was very echo-chambery.
Maybe because that is exactly how some of us feel? No different to those who are holding the line that Ardern did the right thing.
I think the echo chamber you should be more concerned about is the one which just accepts nationwide house arrest.,

The very FIRST post in this thread is one talking about govt action....
Unintentionally, threads just got split that way by Duluth
My ten cents worth; it's all intertwined.
-
@Baron-Silas-Greenback Yes you made your point eloquently about 400 posts ago. Which is my point. The telling thing is it's how you feel.
I do like that when you were asked what you had done differently you had a plan. Of course your plan doesn't have to bear scrutiny in the same way the lockdown does.
The move To Lvl 4 blindsided me, as I said at the time, because it didn't follow the established protocols. Whether it was the right move - as I said too early to say for sure. I'm sure govt was privy to information that hasn't been shared. Maybe we were way less prepared than they have let on and Lvl 4 was seen as the best bad choice.
Dunno - it's all conjecture

It’s worth pointing out that the most vocal critic of the government on this thread has said that in his opinion National would have done the same. Didn’t see anyone contradict that either.
So characterising the thread as just critical of Jacinda is wrong.
This is just one of the ways we can make our opinions heard, am sure people on here have contacted MPs where appropriate as well.
If we have over reacted (say compared to Sweden or Australia), and we think both major parties would have acted the same, doesn’t that point to a systemic problem that we should address?
You may say that the economy is not ruined yet, but even the most rosey assessment is that we are in for a significant amount of damage.
If we have a disaster response that causes as much damage as the disaster we should probably fix that.

@Baron-Silas-Greenback was asking for opinons basically.
I'm inclined to agree with you, but can see the benefit in have an economic one. Can't see how you can extract the politics when the PM is deciding when we can take a shit.
There's nothing wrong with having more threads.. it makes ongoing conversations easier to follow. An overall economic thread, a UK thread whatever.
After the initial exponential growth of new coronavirus threads we have seen a sharp declineIt would be almost impossible to have a NZ virus thread that doesn't discuss the govt response though.

Hah! Tune in every day at 1pm to find out how many threads have been generated, and how many are locked

Director-General of Health Dr Ashley Bloomfield has announced four more Covid-19 related deaths in New New Zealand.
This brings the country's death toll to nine.
One person was in Wellington, the other three were from the Rosewood rest home cluster in Christchurch, he said.

If we have over reacted (say compared to Sweden or Australia),
it's not as if Australia is this open and free country at the moment. Pubs, clubs, restaurants, and bars are all shut. All leisure activities are shut. Gyms are shut. Schools are effectively shut. There is no movement of people. Fines are being given out for basic shit (a guy got a $1,300 fine for driving 40 minutes up the coast for a tinder hookup). People are barely leaving their homes. Retail exists, but it may as well not, because you can't go shopping.
Bunnings however, is making a fortune.
The main difference is the Govt has done everything they can to keep the trades working, because the impact of them closing would be even more catastrophic.

I would like to know from the media about the death rates and clusters in rest homes from a bad flu season for comparism.
-
@Baron-Silas-Greenback indeed, I do wonder if some of these at risk people could still get the normal flu-jab?
I think 3 of the 9 that have died were over 90, and those in BUrwood are likely dementia or similar?

A lengthy read from Bob Jones (two conclusion headings before the actual ending ).
A controversial character for sure, but as always, he's fairly thought provoking on political matters.
Six weeks ago at a small dinner party I remarked to three of our most senior government figures, "get ready to write a huge cheque for Air NZ", the response - puzzlement.

Rosewood is a mix of care levels including hospital-level care.
Although Burwood Hospital is a hospital, it doesn't do emergency surgery or care, it does broken bones including a spinal unit and other similar surgery and convalescent care from those. They also do rehabilitation.
In the past, I think this cluster would have been sent to Princess Margaret Hospital, but that's not really up to it any more.
