Sam Whitelock: How I heard I wouldn't captain the All Blacks

Sam Whitelock: How I heard I wouldn't captain the All Blacks

Sam Whitelock admits he would have loved the opportunity to captain the All Blacks despite falling short to international teammate Sam Cane.

Every article 'surprising selection of cane over Whitlock' not one of them mentioning the total shit look of having the AB Captain playing in Japan. Soon as he decided on a playing sabbatical, he can fuck off from being Captain.

@nzzp note 'playing', having a holiday is not bad. Richie was wise enough to realise playing as AB Captain was a no go

Which test was Andrew Hore ABs captain for?

    It was a club game.

Mods, can we have a category for "Pithiest Post" in next year's Fernies?

I will never forget him leading the first ever showing of Kapa O Pango. Passion like I've never seen from an AB captain before.

His first leading of the Haka in Paris, 2004 was uber-special.

@Victor-Meldrew wasn't it against South Africa in Dunedin? Came as a surprise to everyone including the crowd

Edit: you're right, I was thinking of the first edition of Kapo o pango

@Victor-Meldrew I like to think our Haka went up a notch from that point forward. Taking into account Kapa o Pango not long after.
That was a special one though.

Friend of mine was at the Paris game in '04.

The AB's wore red (poppies) for the first time and the FFR had placed information on the seats about the importance of the haka & about Dave Gallagher and NZ forces in France in WW1 & WW2. They dimmed the lights for the Haka and the crowd went silent

Thinks it is probably the most special haka performance in front of a crowd he has ever seen.

    Definitely.

Tana was one of the AB legends- no nonsense, no whining, play the best you can, have a great smile when you win or lose, love having a beer with the opposition.

    Smart bloke too.

Grew into that. I watched him as a talented but rugby dumb 18 or 19 year old playing for Wellington. Talented, but made terrible decisions in and off the field.

Must have been in 1996, and it was in that off season he got serious about fitness, and the rest is history.

Anyone who comes up with the idea of breaking up a bar-fight with a handbag certainly isn't lacking in the decision-making department....

Like Umaga, Sam Cane has that serious, focussed, but calm look when things are getting tough. Think he'll be a safe pair of hands.

@nzzp that's the one, went off and worked hard on plyometrics, sprint training, etc. Came back a gun.
