Remember back at the start of this, when we got all optimistic about how this might change our lifestyles?
Driving home last night i realised it took precisely 8 working days back in the office to return to old ways. Leave home at 7.30, home at 6? check. Bike rides with the kids? nil. Evening strolls with the wife? nil. Running? next to non existent.
The only difference now is, i am not yet running the kids to sports. And i can't go for a cheeky schooner. And a restaurant booking is for 90 mins max. And pre/post drinks won't happen.
This bit might actually be worse than being "trapped" at home.

@mariner4life we have changed our spending habits, we saved money during lockdown (I was lucky enough to keep working, full pay including KPIs etc) and it made us realise we waste money.
As to lifestyle, yeah, slotted back to 'normal' although I keep thinking about doing more of the stuff we did, but weather had finally turned up here and rain un-enthuses me to do stuff outside.
-
@mariner4life Been thinking much the same. Takes 28 days they say to break a bad habit and three days to pick it back up again.
I lost 7 kgs over lockdown because I ate and drank better. Plus saved some money which as I am on a 20% salary sacrifice is a good thing. Within a couple of weeks I'm eating poorly, going to the pub too often (sorry bout that mate - I'll have one for you later) back in the office for 13 hour days and spending money I can't afford to.
Oh and agonising about it all the way to the boozer ….
-
@taniwharugby I too have saved lots of money over this period, but I don't know WTF I usually spend my money on. I don't go on drinking binges, I don't gamble, I'm like a bloody Lutheran pastor, yet somehow when Covid isn't on I piss away my money.
TBF, I'm not complaining, and I've got refunds for flights and music festivals to come back in soon too so it's nice to have a lot more spare cash for when we can do stuff again.

Was having beers on the street with a few neighbours and we all realised the same thing. At the moment we have nothing short to medium-term to look forward to. No holidays, no big spends - what we've got now, is what we've got. For the foreseeable future. Don't get me wrong, we are pretty fortunate to live where we do and there are loads of natural activities around and great things to do, but the usual life cycle of holidays, events, etc just isn't there. Kind of depressing.
Managed to get out on the golf course yesterday and boy did I suck shit. Couldn't hit a cows arse with banjo, think I put 3 balls all day on the fairway and averaged around 3 putts per green. Average. Had a 2 though, so there is that.

the "nothing to look forward to" thing is really tough. Mrs Mariner and i head off for things all the time. Now? Nothing.

Yeah, it’s not so much not going to the pub, it’s knowing you can’t go for the foreseeable future. It’s a bastard.

Golf just got way more interesting.

@MajorRage there's always that 1 hole or shot that brings you back...I played 9 on Saturday, hit 1 fairway, the last hole when I hit a long draw on a dog leg, middle of fairway setting up perfectly on a long par 4...reminded me there is still hope
-
@mariner4life indeed. Although I have no interest in getting on a plane right now, this time last year we were getting ready for trip to greece for two weeks of relaxation, indulgence and straight out gluttony. This year? We might be able to go camping. Might.

Come on lads, chin up and all that.
2020 has been a fucking shitshow but if the most we have to complain about is the lack of an overseas holiday to look forward to, then we are doing pretty pretty well. (Note, I'm not saying that some of us haven't had way more than that thrown at us, and I'm not intending to margianalise what many have been through)
For me, I just keep reminding myself of all the people out there that have lost family members , lost jobs, lost relationships, and maybe worst of all, lost their sense of hope for the future.
This year totally fucked with my family plans, but I'm under no illusions that I'm still one of the very lucky ones - I spent 6 weeks in lockdown with my family, quality time that we will never forget. I have a job to return to, and a home to get back to that we have realised that we all miss so much.
No doubt there will be a period of austerity, some cutbacks (not on the wine or food front obvs), and overseas travel will be the first to go. But I can live with that.
And I'll always have the Fern!!!

@MajorRage yeah we were in Brisbane this time a year ago and supposed to be in Crete this week. Eyeing up doing a few days in Devon instead later on in the summer.
Can't see cousins wedding in Raro going ahead in October so hoping there might be some way to get back to NZ for second 21st and Xmas.

Here you go. As promised.
Hope you like Panhead
Fuck, I do ! Who doesn’t ?
For all those lamenting the travel limitations why not use those to your advantage and plan locally. I just had a lovely long weekend at the lodge near Mt Egmont. We’re planning another trip to the Bay of Islands and the Coromandel. Explore your backyard, it can be quite good fun.
