Watched a documentary on Ella Fitzgerald a couple of nights ago and started to listen to some of her stuff.

Holy crap. What a voice and what a singer.

    I watched that too.
Ella had an incredible range and was naturally pitch perfect.
I grew up listening to her records as my parents were big fans, even went to a show Of hers in the 60s in Detroit and still have the tickets.

Not an era I've listened much to....yet.

Been recommended to listen to Sarah Vaughan and Peggy Lee by a friend who's seriously into jazz. From what I've heard/read both very different singers, but way up there in the stratosphere with Ella.

@Victor-Meldrew add Billie Holiday, Dinah Washington and Nina Simone and you have all the bases covered. Although they all covered multiple genres.

    Thanks for that.

Downloaded Peggy Lee's "Black Coffee" album today as a start. Simply sublime.

Next week I'll check out the Divine One...

It would have been but they used to live there.
Dad was seconded to GM on a sabbatical to learn the latest stuff (he was a design engineer) and bring back to his work in NZ. They actually got married over there and used to live in Flint. Their old house in now a run down slum.
They had a lot of black friends and shared a love of jazz/swing, going to shows like Ellington, Basie, Jonah Jones and Armstrong
It probably was what drew me to listening to soul music as I always had a soft spot for horns. When , as a teen, I listened to Dexys “Searching for the young soul rebels” it had me tracing back the Northern Soul inspiration and went from there.

    @Crucial

Read that Sarah Vaughan & Peggy Lee were once asked who they thought was the best jazz singer.

Their reply was: "You mean, apart from Ella?"

A few random songs cropped up whilst doing the housework this afternoon, what a pleasure, love hearing songs you haven't heard in a long time..

(actually one of my all time fave songs)

    Vibes got high!

That first Denys album was awesome , when my light turns green was a personal favourite, i hadn’t listened to it for years , and played it recently while driving .

Didn’t care too much for the come on Eileen stuff that followed though personally

Kevin Rowland is definitely an odd one. The first album was all about Northern Soul then he just changed up both music and image to Celtic Folk and half the band left (and formed The Bureau). Too Rye Aye did have a couple of songs that would have fitted with SFTYSR though.
