I wonder how much of this is driven by Narcism? We had thousands crowding streets across Australia on the weekend during a global pandemic Do they really give a damn about black lives? Or are they more interested in getting that sweet selfie at the protest for facebook. If there is another wave of pandemic deaths (I doubt their will be but that is official advice) would those lives matter?
I don't think it's all narcissism, though I'm sure that is a small part of it. I think there's a section of the population that genuinely enjoy the feeling of righteous anger. They revel in the thought that Australia is a broken society, and they are fighting to make it better. It gives them a reason to get out of bed in the morning.
They look on at the US protests with a tinge of jealousy, as they yearn to be on the barricades, sparring with cops, eyes weeping from tear gas. They are soldiers looking for an army.
Now of course there is an issue here with indigenous incarceration, as well as indigenous health, education etc etc. It's important, and successive Governments have spent billions trying to solve it, and yet the issues persist.
But the details don't really matter to a sizeable chunk of the protesters. They are just chasing the feeling of being right.

Cook county
Steven Spielberg still working in the county assessors office?
Great post and yeah interesting to hear from people on the inside. Spoke to a mate in Colorado the other day (he's Irish with an Aussie wife, met in Hong Kong, so fair to say they have quite a "worldly" view and have had enough of the whole political scene and will be leaving the US at the end of the year. More to do with his job than politics probably, but he doesn't want to retire there and has seen the changes since he first lived there 30+ years ago. Interesting times.

"He said the impetus was how African Americas die at a rate twice their proportion of the state population." Context is everything. As stated this is nonsense: the rate at which African Americans die is exactly the same as for other racial groups, i.e. 100%
Edit: sorry @photo-fox beat me to it.

I had lunch with my Zimbabwean friend yesterday. This madness has actually gotten to the point where some of her white friends have messaged her to apologise for their 'white privilege'. The kind of person who demands others take a knee for them are not the kind of people who should have any power at all.
I'm starting to think there is a parallel here with the turning away from religion. Maybe people really do need something to worship and believe in. I'm no charlie church but give me preachy Christians any day over this mess.
What the actual fuck?
FYI
The foot washing I suspect stems from The Last Supper (John 13 ... I just Googled).
Some of the more "expressive" Christians do it as a symbol of ... something ... humility? Respect?
Dunno.
Google it.

@photo-fox is 18 (and counting) up votes for a single post some kind of TSF record?
Certainly up there for something non boobie related anyway

Getting up there. Seem to remember a 22 or thereabouts but probably involved a hot chick (see that @Rembrandt got there before me).
The interesting thing for me is that it a politics thread - and nobody EVER agrees, about anything, anywhere, let alone the US. Consensus about rugby is rare, but here...

I'm not sure they are all agreement likes as such. But it's a great post because it is an opinion of someone in the country unfiltered by media or anything else. And it wasn't aimless screeching it was interesting information

I up vote for various reasons. Not necessarily content, comment, but humour, etc, as well. Not sure why anybody cares about votes anyway?
Isn't the internet a competition for 'likes' and the like (like up votes) which tells you how much you can value yourself as a person?

In some quarters it feels like it

I gave @photo-fox an upvote for the compliment. Which is really like patting myself on the back.

Ending my overly long post by saying... I'm humbled by y'all. I wish my compatriots had half the knowledge of and a tenth the ability to peacefully discuss our nation's problems as I've seen displayed in this thread.

@antipodean that last bit was sort of a compliment to all of us wasn't it? 🤔😁
