@dogmeat I tried one of Double Vision's at the Taranaki Beer Festival - it was excellent. Favourite beer of the day.
Unfortunately - I can't remember which one it was (they've got three this year). I guess I'll need to go buy some to figure it out.

I know you’re the man to turn to when it comes to Movie reviews……any chance you can give us a run down on the Beer fest ? That’s one that I’d love to do a roadie to one of these days….

    Thanks in advance.

It was a while ago... and I was drunk... and I'm a little drunk now... so... fuck it? I'll give it a go?
Not sure how to review it other than - it's what it says on the tin.
It's a beer festival - in Taranaki. Taranaki is a prick of a place to get to - so fuck all breweries bother to attend.
So - you get a mini-Beervana - with a few local breweries that you wouldn't get anywhere else - and not many of the 'bigger' breweries that you get at all the other things like this.
Maybe 18 beer stalls? 7 or 8 food stalls.
Oh - and shit - nearly forgot... they set up a professional wrestling ring in the hall as entertainment. C-grade pro-wrestling going on in the background... how the fuck did I nearly forget that?
The more I think about it - the more I highly recommend. Taranaki breweries that would never go to Beervana or even Hamilton's Great Beer Festival... and C-grade rasslin'. A metric fuck-tonne of pricks wearing Taranaki-Hardcore clothing. Taranaki in a nutshell.

Calling all guitarists on here - anyone have one with a Floyd Rose bridge? The lad has one, and we attempted the first string change the other night with youtube assisting. Fair to say it did not go well...

Anyone got a good resource or advice for working with these things? Bloody nightmare!!!

Any chance you watched this one?

No, didn't see that one - will watch now, thanks.

Would note that I am already 1 min in to his 20min clip and he has already admitted to having "pre-done" about 5 steps and he has laid out the kit in this manner:

    782d6ecc-22e6-4ebc-ae3e-4a46203f431b-image.png

I suspect that Fess was not exaggerating.

Edit - that pic includes a number of tools that he has designed and made himself to fill a gap in the market.

Fess is going to be taking a bit of my $ over the next few years

    Fuck all of that.

Trade it in and buy him an imitation Fender Strat. They look and sound better anyway.

( this is all just my opinion of course, kids playing music is always awesome, encourage him anyway you can )

This all sounds very complicated, I had no idea there was so much involved with them !

    155 bucka seems ridiculous.

He has a Strat already (not an imitation) - he bought that a few years ago, and the new Ibanez is a recent upgrade from that (with his own savings 💪)

It’s a wicked guitar, looks and sounds incredible - just a little tricky to change the stings apparently

Nice, good work. A genuine strat isn’t cheap !

My only other suggestion is to become his roadie and do this if disaster strikes….

That’s good work! And yeah, I have every intention of retiring to be his roadie/manager at some point. Just a couple more years…

    Final suggestion.

Switch to bass, we never change our strings.

He has a bass too…and you’re right, I don’t think we have ever changed the stings on that and he’s had it 2 years

I was on a bass group on FB and it’s amazing how feral and “internet tough” everyone started getting particularly over lockdown arguing over, of all things, how often to change strings on their basses !

Then there was the whole criticism of Cliff Williams ( AC/DC bass player ) who plays about two, sometimes three, notes per song. All the technical nerds would lament his lack of technical ability, all the “purists” would point out his class and restraint.

( AC/DC bass lines are seriously beginner level stuff but I digress )

The fern is amazingly sane in comparison.

Ok fellas, got a question not tech that leads to another.
1 As I planning trip overseas later in year, I have set up a Wise debit card, seems good, has anyone heard bad things about them>
2 I can have a digital card etc, but if I want it in google wallet I have to set screen lock, is there anyway I can have a lock (pin ) just for Google wallet. I don't want to lock screen on phone all the time as I find it a complete pain in the arse!!

Haven’t used the travel digital card thing. but I can definitely vouch for Wise - I’ve been using them for years, really efficient, great rates etc

@Nepia said in Movie review thread...:

Completed my watch of the Best Picture nominees, so here's my ranking of them from worst to best.

10 . Maestro: I tried to continue watching this after discussing it with @Victor-Meldrew but I couldn't get more than 10 minutes into my rewatch. It's just not very good.

9 . American Fiction: Aside from Maestro I enjoyed every other movie in the list but some more than others. This was one of the less than others, it started off really well but kind of faltered a bit in the end. I think it needed to lean more into it's central conceit (mild spoiler coming) of an author pretending to be "street".

8 . The Holdovers: This was an amiable movie by a good director, and thankfully Paul Giamatti didn't do his whisper voice very often. A crotchety old teacher is left in charge of the few kids left over Xmas at a fancy pants boarding. Bonding happens.

7 . Killers of the Flower Moon: Again a good movie, by a great director, but there's no way he deserved a best director nomination for this. It was serviceable by his standards but unlike most of his movies I think other directors could have directed it just as well. Led me to the book which I enjoyed more than the movie.

6 . Zone of Interest: The best holocaust movie since Schindler's List (that's a weird thing to write). Oddly enough it kind of doesn't have an overarching narrative, something I'd normally find annoying. Tells a bit of the story of the outside life of the Hoess the Auschwitz commander and his family.

5 . Poor Things: Fairly bonkers movie with lots of Emma Stone nudity ... but she shouldn't have won best actress. It's a play the autistic/mentally handicapped person style role that Oscar likes, but Lily Gladstone in Killers was superb in an understated and "real role". Anyway, still a good fun film, very black comedy in an alternate steampunk style world.

4 . Anatomy of a Fall: A French film, a German actress (who was also the lead female in Zone of Interest), and filmed in a mix of French and English. Interesting look at the French style of court (judges directly questioning the accused and witnesses etc) and I'm not sure it is better then ours.

3 . Past Lives: Two old Korean friends who haven't seen each other in year catch up in New York (she lives there with her husband and he is visiting) and drama happens, but not really.

2 . Barbie: The Barbieheimer one-two punch. Good to see a weird comedy-drama based on a doll get nominated. Greta Gerwig should have had Scorcese's best director nod though.

1 . Oppenheimer: The Oscars and I agree, yay. I'm not sure if this is Nolan's best movie (I'm still partial to Memento) but it's definitely Oscar worthy and the best film I saw last year. I'd quite like to see him make some more grounded stuff. Tenet tends to pale in comparison to this movie.

    About halfway through this list

    9 American Fiction. Enjoyed it.
8 The Holdovers. Couldn't get on with it. Bailed after 30 mins.
5 Poor Things. Rubbish. Could only stomach 20 mins.
2 Barbie. Decent. Should be nowhere near the Oscars.

4 Anatomy of a Fall. Excellent. Snoop the dog is a better actor than most in the above.

This film then daylight to the others. The 24-hr above the Arctic Circle Summer daylight.

Heading that way in a couple of weeks so thanks for the heads up ABC.

So is fallout only worth watching if you've played the game then?

The last of us was terrific and I never played the game.

The Resident Evil movies were ultimately pretty shit on the whole and I played the games loads.

    Conclusion. Don’t play the games.

    I’m looking forward to Fallout

Ticwatch pro 3 is a great all rounder, although one of the main reasons I got it is it can have an esim and work independent of your phone and looks like that's not available in NZ.

Runs on wear OS and seems pretty accurate for tracking runs with ghostracer and throwing them into Strava.
