Going by schools alone (as per the Mako website) the squad contains 10/35 locally schooled players.
I'm sure someone will add a few in that moved to a another area after being in junior rugby in Ta$man but certainly not 18 more as this clown seems to think. -

I was really proud of the Taniwhas efforts against the (Crusaders) Mako, they should a lot of heart and scored some good tries only trouble is once Northland scrored, Ta$man got two back

@taniwharugby That list is only the opinion of one RugbyPass journo about who he thinks the contenders are. It's not Foster's list of players that will receive the call-up.

Still think one of our main weapons is being under-used: Jordan Hyland.
Granted last night we struggled to just get the ball, let alone dictate where the scraps we got went, but we simply need to get him involved more.
Good to see a bit more mature game from Ranger, with limited ball he didnt squander it like last week, shame Tua injured himself, was looking ok (in spite of a couple of errors)
Low bar, but Gregory was 100 times better than last week too.
Nock-Faiane could grow into a nice combo, Levien looked sharp when he came on too!!
Thought our 3 tries were all well constructed tries, so certainly somethign to build on.
For long periods I thought our defence in the middle was pretty good (although a couple of basic lapses left huge holes) but as we have for a few seasons now, we defend far too narrow across the park allowing them to have players well on the outside.
Next week will be interesting, Tua gone for season? Gregory unknown, no idea if we are allowed Jack next week.
I'd maybe look at starting Te Whata-Colley, scrum seemed a wee bit more solid when he came on, if no Jack or Gregory, Hohaia (who had a couple of nice touches last night) to start and Cooper to FB, have to assume that brings Macilai into the bench too?

@Crucial some interesting news I had passed to me this morning , apparently the NZRFU are trying to reduce the salary cap ..,but one of the biggest oppositions they having to this proposal is coming from the Ta$man CEO, Tony Rogers , when you consider what sort of money they have tied up in players you can understand that..
There were reports that of the team that took the field last night, only 1 player, Tim O’Malley has played club rugby in the region, I suspect that might be more around 3,the rest all played super rugby , there are some players like Mahonri Ngakuru from Papamoa in the BOP and Dwayne Polataivao (Samoan International)who played for Pakuranga in the Auckland club comp that have been flown in.
I have no issue with what Ta$man are doing , When they lose their all blacks they ,that’s where having quality cover is a must , and plus they have the financial resources to exploit this situation ..
Me personally, I would prefer to put the money back into the Union and develop coaches and players , that way you always have an attachment to your local supporters and sponsors , because when the money donors stop, well we all know what happens then.. -
@Steven-Harris the cap is the same for everyone except where it becomes unfair is that it is based on union income. That means that if you host a couple of big games (final, super, ABs) you get a higher cap. That perpetuates an upward spiral.

@Crucial success breeds success.
Am sure players are keen to go there, solid pathway to Crusaders (and other franchises too) and then ABs, am sure probably happy to take a bit of a pay cut in hope of longer term win
The fact they were able to get both Telea and Reece there shows there is still work to be done though.
Is the money they get for abs from NZR part of the salary cap?

Provinces should select local club players when they have injuries and unavailability. It's a rep competition.. or at least its meant to be. If the replacements from the provinces club competition aren't good enough then the province should lose games

@Duluth while Northland havent enjoyed the success of other sides, I think the past few years our crowd numbers have been decent (despite our lack of success) and I think this is in part to the Northland 'rule' of selecting players who have played club footy here (aside from super rugby players or NZ Colt level players) as this gives supporters a bit more connection as the guys they see running round on a Saturday arvo on club footy has made it into the Northland team.
I can only imagine the numbers we would have had last weekend with the team we had, the sunshine, and then fast forward 4 weeks into the comp, if we had a positive win/loss ratio...even more if we had a season where we nabbed that elusive shield or had a home semi final!!

I had a look at a few club team sheets to see whether the reports were correct.
Without much effort, I found - of the non-Super rugby players - Te Ahiwaru Cirikadaveta, Jacob Norris, Kershawl Sykes-Martin, Isaac Salmon, Cameron Suafoa, Braden Stewart and Tim O'Malley listed to play. Plus a number of other guys who are in the squad, but not last night's team.

In 2017, Ta$man made the final of the Mitre 10 Cup Premiership with the 4th lowest team and match related costs of any union. Source - the Deloittes State of the Union report.
In 2018, these jumped significantly, I'm pretty sure because we hosted a test match with a special arrangement with NZ rugby.
Why am I pretty sure? Because we didn't sign any big players - unless we happened to decide to pay Wyatt Crockett a fortune.
I guess we can all await the 2019 Deloittes report with interest. But, the thing is, in 2019 we didn't sign any new big players either. If our payments have gone up, it's because we paid some of our star players more (perhaps to fend off a bunch of vultures)!
But, with a bit of luck, it's going to turn out that we won the Premiership on a relative shoestring - in which case, there is going to be a reckoning!

@Steven-Harris The only genuine poaches Ta$man has made, IMO, have been Kane Hames and then this season Sevu Reece and Mark Talea.
Mostly, we have signed people out of school or unwanted from club rugby and developed them into good players.
Though I'm pretty sure Canterbury would now wish they'd retained Will Jordan!
Otherwise, there has been a great deal of sookery since we won!

@Chris-B not that he is a poach, but from a Northland perspective, it is frustrating that Isi signs with Canterbury, only to be loaned to Ta$man, who didnt really need him, whereas someone of his calibre left a hole in our side as evidenced last night.
Have to assume this is Crusaders/Canterbury/ Ta$man working together to stockpile players, and despite signing with Canterbury, was always heading to Ta$man.

@taniwharugby Yes - the other Chris pointed out that Ta$man has benefited from being part of the Crusaders 'region. As do Canterbury.
I suspect we've got Sevu through the same mechanism i.e. guys that don't want to have two homes 500 miles apart. And Andrew Goodman being a coach in both organizations.
But, I don't regard Isi as a poach. Canterbury will recall him at the most inopportune time for Ta$man - mark my words. They did the same thing a few years ago with Jordan Taufua.
