I guess it's all about how long the lag is but the signs are the NHS is much better equipped to cope this time.
Daily New cases have tripled since the start of the month. Daily deaths have doubled but that death rate was off a really low base so doubling equates to 37 deaths in real terms.
By comparison the last time we saw Daily New cases at the same rate as today was early May and there were over 1,000 deaths per day.
This ratio is what should be used to decide lockdowns, number in hospital + deaths. Not the number of cases.
Isn’t the aim to head those hospitalised and dead numbers off before they happen?
My point is that the number of cases in the "second wave" doesn't appear to be as deadly or force as many people into hospital as the first wave. So the lockdown calcuation needs to change with the new data
The thresholds change for sure, but it should be that the rate of cases growth can have more tolerance. No use counting the dead and then reacting
Also no use destroying an economy if 10,000 cases means 2 people in hospital and no deaths (random number picked from my arse). Have to use the data properly.

It probably has changed though.
Uk went into lockdown on 16 March when 7-day average was 158 daily cases and 9 daily deaths.Currently it is 7-day average of 4,501 daily cases and 25 daily deaths.
(I don't know the hospitalisation stats).

i still battle to get my head around the fact we ground the world to a halt for a disease that has killed less than a million people over the course of 9 months. That's world wide.
The world's population has grown by 60 million in 2020
yes, i understand it would have been different if we did nothing, that's not my angle. I am just staggered that it happened, and struggle to process it.
And there is no end in sight. It's just mind blowing.

Faced with a similar challenge in 2018, without the technology and medical know how of 2020, the world lost 5% of its population to the itty bitty yearly flu

What has surprised me is that it is national governments of all stripes. Liberal western democracies, one party states, monarchies, rich, poor .... etc

The UK health secretary, Matt Hancock, has said fewer than 10,000 people a day are estimated to be contracting Covid-19 in the UK.
Britain reported 6,178 new daily cases of Covid-19 on Wednesday, which is a similar level to the number during the first peak earlier this year. However, far more people are now being tested for the disease so the two figures are not directly comparable.
Appearing on Sky News, Hancock said:
(At the peak), we estimate through surveys that over 100,000 people a day were catching disease, but we only found around 6,000 of them, and they tested positive. Now we estimate that it’s under 10,000 people a day getting the disease. That’s too high, but it’s still much lower than in the peak.

Government releases track n trace app. BBC only interested in discussing the "problems". Great way to encourage people to get behind it.
Oh by the way the problems are that it may not work on older phones and old people may not know how to use a phone and poor people might not have a phone. Fucken hell government why are you doing this to people!

I'd I'd like to know what the elderly and vulnerable, (you know, the only one's who die), think about ruining our kids future on account of looking after them.
I'd bet they'd say, go back to your lives, I've lived through far worse than this fiasco.
Funny how the modern world never asks the people they are "saving" for their thoughts or ideas.

@Bones have you installed it?
My area is "HIGH" risk. The joy! Didn't need the app to tell me that. Everyone at my work downloaded it.6,634 new cases and 40 new deaths in the UK. Wow. I feel so sad for the world. I know that sounds all fluffy and maybe more than half of those positive cases are only experiencing a mild illness but man this is shit.
When you sit back and look at it... Just shit.
Incredibly thankful for my health and my healthy family today. 😪
I have my panic days. Today is one of them! -
Follow the science they said.
My arse.
-
@R-L ahh man, chin up!
Nah haven't downloaded it yet but will do. Bonesetta has though and I'm pretty much never out of her sight.
