@taniwharugby - Pat O'Connor, top bloke. Good player although not quite top level at lock.

Played for Aus U21s. Now there's something we don't get to hear about anymore ...

Apparently David Pocock retired today. Not joking, thought he did that ages ago.

@antipodean - I know what you mean, although it seems he played for Robbie Deans in the Top League before the Covid cancellation in March. Will still have a bit of a connection to the game as the face of a new schoolboys rugby comp in Perth.

And in other Perth news the Force have picked up a new forwards coach, John McKee:

Former Fiji national rugby coach John McKee has joined the Western Force as an assistant to Tim Sampson, the Perth-based side said on Friday.

Just watched a very tight elimination final in Sydney Premier Rugby between Northern Suburbs and Eastwood, played at times in pissing rain.

Was9-all at full-time, with a penalty the difference after 100. Tough, wet weather footy and no tries. Props earned their money today

The Nine Network is set to become the new home of rugby with an announcement expected to be made as soon as Thursday.

The Australian understands Foxtel’s 25-year association with rugby, which took it into the professional era, may come to a close with Rugby Australia leaning towards a deal with Nine.

That agreement is expected to see Super Rugby matches and Wallabies Tests live on the Nine Network and Stan for the first time next year.

On Monday, Nine Entertainment newspapers reported the network was close to signing a multi-year deal with RA. Previous reports stated they had offered to pay about $30 million a year in cash and free advertising.

Last November, Castle walked away from Foxtel’s $40m-a-year, five-year offer for the broadcast rights (Foxtel is part-owned by News Corp, publisher of The Australian). Castle was pushing Foxtel for $100m more.

@NTA So that means FTA rugby for Oz? But for less money. A choice for the long term, with fingers really really crossed!

I'm hoping 2 Aussie games per week which will help right the ship. Means more private equity will need to be found but I don't think that's a bad thing given Twiggy Forrest is willing to part with some cash for his "beloved" Force. As long as RA stop asking clubs for $50 / player from my club to help mend the fences, I'm good with it.

Is this true or News Corp spin?

I dunno but pre Covid Oz rugby was probably not getting it's true value, cosy club with Foxtel IMO.

So Fox's offer was $200M over 5 years (I think that was split into cash + advertising/production costs).

I believe Castle was pushing Fox for a bigger amount over the 5-year contract, in the firm belief that Optus were coming to market with a serious offer north of $40M per annum in total. Can't say exactly what it was, but going from $40M to $60M per annum is not chicken feed.

I'm prepping for an epic meltdown if the NPC gets dumped in all this.

It will be an even more epic meltdown if I'm forced to watch the NRC too.

Assume 9 won’t pick up the NPC or NZ Super Games and they would still hopefully be on Fox?

Super will be a package deal so I assume it will go to 9 too.

There is a bit of talk about what it means for broadcast of other competitions beside SRAu and TRC - a bit of horse trading about NRC and Premier Club Rugby no doubt as well?

Probably good for Aussie rugby but not for me and many who are not going to drop fox. I will keep fox since they cover cricket and NH rugby too. It just means we have to now pay extra for an inferior service. Streaming is nowhere near as stable.

Why do you think streaming isn't as stable, akan? Just asking out of interest.

I stream through Kayo, and I also have a Stan subscription. Will keep Kayo for all the other sport I watch, but will thoroughly recommend picking up Stan if it gets the rugby. Has a great range of movies and TV shows on there.
