Tuning in late to this series, and instantly remembered that it pays not to think too much about Am Cup rules. Quite how Dean Barker is the best helmsman the USA has to offer, and that Italian Jimmy Spithill. 🙂

What max speeds are they hitting? I had a quick look on TVNZ on demand and saw 50knots for USA in race 1.

    Any higher?

    Don't think so

The yanks either have no boat control or the helmsman just turn it wrong there - game over

If USA can win a start, a BIG if, then we might have a race. Otherwise Luna Rossa wins 4-0.

It must all seem very 2003 blue bucket out on the Gulf to Barker.

At approx 18 million NZD per race, you'd hope so! I coulda brought and paid for a life time of Hawk flights for that 😉

By my calculations, if it was about 25deg out there, LSS was about 662kts, they were close to mach .08 at 53 knots. Fast for a boat, but yes very expensive compared to a Hawk in dollars per mach number. Hawk is mid point eights straight and level like an A330 I think?

Cost aside, I think I would rather have a go in the boat.

Not sure that they will race. The met service has it at 7kph, so well under the 6 knot limit. Forecast is for it to fill in a bit by 3pm. Might end up being a displacement race. No idea how that might pan out or whether they can get around the course in time (doubtful).

That AC forecast also has a NE -N, the met service has S-SW until 9pm. Completely contrary. A sea breeze is likely so maybe AC have it right, but it might just counter the prevailing to nothing.
I had an afternoon on the couch with a few beers planned. Very annoying.

They look very slow tacking or gybing too, seem to lose a huge amount of boat speed

@taniwharugby That start was even but Luna Rossa got the favoured right side.

USA needs to be ultra-aggressive in the pre-start in race 4 because they won't win unless they force a mistake from Luna Rossa. No point in trailing every leg - again.
