ok, my best mates 40th is coming up in the next couple of months.

I'd like to get some Speights delivered for old times sake.

I've done some searching and the places ive found are all out of stock, does anyone know of somewhere I can get some in the UK?

Just use a PC app to create some speights labels and cover some generic draught beer. Guaranteed he won't even know the difference.

I assume you tried the obvious - sanza.co.uk - they're currently out of stock, but it looks like they expect more stock in one weeks' time.
Otherwise - yeah, @MN5 's idea has merit, although I can't think of any beers in the UK which have that particular NZ not-really-ale-not-really-lager colour or "taste". Maybe Carlsberg with some food-colouring? Or Red Stripe?

I know what you mean, the UK has other beers that are just as shit as Speights and then some but there is a definite "UK" flavour to them. It's a different kind of generic blandness if that makes sense.

Yeah - UK has proper ales. And proper lagers.
Whereas NZ has some bastard-child of the two, somehow. I don't know the technical details of how they did it, but - when you can call Tui an "East India Pale Ale", and Speights a "Gold Medal Ale" - they really did find a way of turning gold into shit.

Maybe try mixing some bland ales, with some bland lagers, and see what you get. Get some bottles, fill them up, away you go. Genuine Speights.

Tui is a scourge upon our entire society. Fuck Tui.

It looks and tastes like Speight’s with a little bit of poo mixed in. It’s exactly the same as every other generic NZ Draught style beer, but somehow manages to be worse.

On the nose, I detect subtle notes of wet dog and semen. It tastes almost entirely of malt and carbonation. It’s difficult to identify any one particular flavour, but I would have to choose… farts. Not necessarily bad farts. Kind of OK, like the way your own farts smell. It’s technically gross, but you can somewhat appreciate it. The aftertaste is just a hit of sweetness and drymouth. I get the feeling the brewers may have forgotten to add the hops.

They claim to be an ‘East India Pale Ale’, which is the biggest crock of shit since the ‘totally real’ moon landing. The IPA was invented because adding a lot of bitter hops to beer meant it could last the entire journey from Britain to India without going off. Tui couldn’t even make it to Nan’s and back. It lies to your face with all the subtlety of Aaron Smith claiming he doesn’t have a girlfriend.

It tastes like how Michael Cheika’s face looks. It tastes like how a toothy blowjob feels. It tastes like how Max Key’s music sounds. It tastes bad.

Tui ads used to have the line, “You’re a man, you know what you like, and you like what you know”. Well I’m pretty sure I don’t like fermented camel piss in a can, so Tui is out the proverbial fucking window.

The worst part is that you can’t even get properly drunk off this shit. It’s a well-known fact that your liver processes one 4% beer in the time that it takes for you to drink a 4% beer. It’s barely even alcohol. You need a proper finisher, like Diesels, to have a good night. While you’re at it, get a good starter too, maybe like Diesels. Fuck it; just drink Diesels.

    Tui? Yeah Right

    Taste Rating: Fucking shit/10

Froth Level: The All Blacks in the 2008 RWC quarterfinals.

Pairs well with: Having no tastebuds, sense of shame, or self-respect.

Hell yeah. I'm going to relish reading that, I just read the first line, and wholeheartedly agree.

I got forced into drinking some when visiting family, and actually felt physically ill after a couple of stubbies. I considered checking whether perhaps they were actually past Best-Before-Date, but didn't bother... it's just that shit.

Fuck, I hate Tui. Even back in the day when the only choices were DB Draught, Lion Red, Export Gold, Speights, Tui, CD, Ranfurly Draught, Rheineck, etc.... and I knew that I could barely taste the difference between most - Tui was the worst.

That's right, I'm saying it... Tui was worse than Rheineck. Tui was worse than Ranfurly Draught.

when I lived in the UK I thought the likes of Speights, Export Gold, Steinie etc were fantastic alternatives to XXXX, Carlsberg, Fosters etc and other such generic lagers they had.

Obviously anything imported was always different again.

I used to have a few places locally (Twickenham / Richmond) that stocked kiwi beers but about 2-3 years ago something changed with the importers and they slowly all stopped stocking.

I chatted to the places and they just told me it was no longer available from the suppliers.

Bummed me out because although you may take the piss out of Speights there is something nice about getting a drink of the brew you "grew up on"

Also miss the Monteiths they used to stock.

Good luck with the search but I guess my message is a sad one that it has got harder to find.

its all about the nostalgia, never claimed Speights is the best beer in the world but by god we've had some bloody good nights whilst drinking it

fingers crossed one of these private importers re stocks 🤞

Crates of Tui, Speights and Export Gold.

Fuck to think we looked down on Lion Red and Lion Brown as being "inferior" to those beers haha.

Not remotely. It had a time and place in my life, old dark still tastes ok to this day.

I'm fairly certain Gold and Old Dark both made their way into my yardglass ( amongst others ) in May 1998.

surprisingly, when I visited the Speights Brewery in Dunedin a few years ago, I had fresh speights on tap. Not expecting it to be any good, I was suprised that fresh and local it tasted pretty decent. Clean, malty, reasonably boring (I am a beer nerd), but well brewed and I'd have enjoyed a pint on a sunny afternoon.

The contrast with overpriced speights from a plastic bottle at rugby stadia was severe.

@nzzp id guess at least partly because almost all Speights is brewed in Auckland and hasn't been made in Dunners for a long time, the stuff you actually get at the brewery still made using the local spring etc

Speights was my bland-NZ-alelager of choice back in the day...
I do miss being able to enjoy it without the knowledge that there is far tastier and more expensive beers out there.
Maybe I'll buy some Speights, Lion Brown, Waikato, DouBro, and have a Waitangi Weekend of reminiscing.
