@snowy they keep using that word. I do not think it means what they think it means

"Super Rugby: Blues boost as Blake Gibson return offsets Dalton Papalii defection"

I'm just baffled, and annoyed, at the headline. WTF are they talking about?

I have just googled to see if there was some other meaning for "defection" that I didn't know about. What am I missing?

i'm glad i am not the only one!! it's been doing my head in since it was first posted. I actually read the article to find out if he had moved to the Chiefs

    Sadly not.

I am starting to see what others having been seeing about Papalii. I do wonder what position will be his best in the long run, especially at AB level. He seems a cross between a 7 and a 6 to me.

He failed his WOF because of defects?
    Weird term to use.

@pukunui It's quite common term in sporting press, for defection when someone is out.

Makes no sense but it is common

@machpants Where? I've never seen it before. Hinton loves American sports; is it common in American sports media?

Maybe it is in UK media? I am certainly aware of having read it before. Still a pointless use of the word but so is learnings

    Don't start me.

What was wrong with lesson, or even lessons? A perfectly serviceable word.

Fuckwits everywhere, mutter, mutter. You'll find me in the GOM thread.

@machpants I have seen defection used in that context before, but I think it was during the M10 Cup last year on Stuff.

@nzzp oh I agree, just saying it has been used by Stuff before, so unsure where they have picked up this new meaning for it from.

Not in UK. Mind you when someone is grassed in the tackle they are said to hit the floor, rather than ground.

Great guy to have in a RWC squad. Like a cross between Kaino and Cane. Wouldn't be upset to see him start at 6/7 if Cane or whoever the 6 is was injured. If he goes ok at 8, he could take Ardie's bench spot when he leaves after the RWC...

Pierce, Robinson and Choat? Won't happen. 2/3 maybe with another on the bench.

Darry is more likely to come in than Pierce.

    I'd have Kneepkens in 14.
