I played U13 rugby with her. She was a very talented centre, I was a shithouse winger. The opposition used to pull her pig tails. I haven't done much since, she's become the best cricketer in the world. And that is my story.

They do the "5 cricketers of the year" as well. Jeetan Patel was named as one of the 5 cricketers of the year in 2015. Take from that what you will...

... that he was stellar in their championship, and they are an English-centric publication?

I reckon Jeets was bloody good and had the misfortune to be around when Dan Vettori was captaining, coaching and selecting the side.

.......and being a much better bowler and batsman, most people consider those qualities reasonably important in a cricketer.

I've always found it a bit of a mystery that he was so good in County cricket, but largely very poor for NZ. Probably says more about the quality of County cricket nowadays?

Comparing him to Vettori is like comparing Daniel Braid to Richie McCaw though.

He's been so good in CC as he got older. Most spinners get better with age. Add to that he was playing week in - week out. Which helps hugely.

The bit that always amazes about Patel being slagged is the idea that after going overseas, getting good coaching, playing consistantly & getting more experienced is not conceivable to many that he's a better bowler than he was.

The 2 tier setup in the CC does mean the second tier is probably not that much better than the NZ scene. Tier one is WAY above it.

That said Neil Wagner helped himself to 6 in Div 1 on the weekend -

http://www.espncricinfo.com/ci/engine/match/946811.html

But he really only has 4 or 5 week of Wagner friendly conditions (it swings around like feck in April / May). He'll take 30 at 15 1st half of the season & 15 @ 40 second half

Needs repeating I think

Wisden's 5 cricketers of the year are based on performances during the English season. A player can only be awarded this once.

Wisden's leading cricketer of the year is based on all cricket in the previous calendar year (started in 2004 or so).

A bit off topic, but I saw Southee bowled well last night for Mumbai.

0 for 25 off four overs in a match where 170 was underpar.

what I noticed was that he seems to be swinging it again.

Is it as simple as the fact that Shane Bond is the Mumbai bowling coach?
