Building myself back up

Swimming last night was shit because I couldn't fully lift my arm (bloody covid jab). Had to do a heap of kick which sucks copious amounts of donkeys balls.
But chest and biceps went OK this morning. Still tender but hopefully all gone by the weekend.
-
@rancid-schnitzel she might have recently jabbed some bodybuilders who were competing? wouldn't be surprised if it was something like that. The good news is that you obviously have some muscle mass as well as lean as fuck. Nice!!
-
@rancid-schnitzel my 1st jab ached for about 24 hours, 2nd one barely at all.

Went fine for swimming this morning. Still tender if I push on the jab spot but otherwise OK. Reminds me of when I had a tetanus shot when I was about 10. That ached for a while.

Another very tough day on Saturday. The so-called "shred diet" might be good for the ego but it's completely useless for functional exercise or at least any serious form of cardio. The body simply needs that fuel to perform. Obviously doesn't help that the temp has risen and summer is upon us but the drop in energy is clearly obvious now.
Was pretty proud of myself on cheat day. Yes I ate 8 schnitzels but no ice cream or chips or candy. Protein bars help to take the edge off and I eat lots of fruit. It will be interesting to see how I go moving forward. Being able to wean myself off that stuff would be a huge achievement.
One thing I'm annoyed with is the Garmin for swimming. For some reason it can't measure kicking so it records this part of the set as rest. I'll put it on the cardio setting tonight and see if there's a difference. Ultimately it should record distance but it seems it's all about body movement. Very weird.

Upvote for schnitzels. Delicious.

Would choose it as my last meal.

Boot camp this morning. Looked at the sums and decided that I couldn't really justify paying for the BC so the GF and I are doing our own one every Wednesday. The social aspect was nice but I want to go up a gear and not pay for something that was getting a bit easy. In summer I might see if Hitler can set me a separate programme involving in and outs from the pool. Happily pay for that.
Anyway GF organises a mean boot camp. 8 different exercises (40 sec on 20 off) x 4 with (50 sec on 10 sec off for that last one). In between each round is either 500m row or 250 elliptical/step. Good shit but the sled absolutely farks me. Might have to work on the breathing or something. Going box jumps, sled, battle ropes then wall balls is murder. Finished off with a 5km run. Hate treadmill but the lap feature is cool. Do one fast and then one moderate. Boring as hell though.
This whole fitness thing is becoming something of an obsession now. I'm getting up earlier and earlier and if I don't swim in the evenings I go for walks listening to podcasts. I haven't eaten chips or sweets for well over a month. I'm not sure I even know why. Am I living life or missing out on some good stuff? All I know is that I feel compelled to do this and if I didn't have to work would be doing even more. Could be worse addictions I guess.

I hear ya to some extent ( although I did have chips during the fight, loads of them ! )
If I can’t work out I get really antsy especially if I have planned to, There was a family relaxing a few days back near my “tire” so I didn’t really feel it was fair to go and interrupt their peace by going to smash the thing like a madman……but I was really restless when I got back cos I had some energy to burn. Not ideal.

Would have been interesting to see their reaction if you walked up to them with a sledgehammer.
But yeah I don't like to force people to move. It's annoying but I'm not so entitled to think that I deserve to be there more than them. Unlike say....cyclists.
And the excess energy is tough when you're mentally geared towards doing something. If I arrive at swimming training and it's cancelled then I'm at a bit of loss. Back in the day I would have been "Choice" time for beer and TV.

Seems like my life going forward is getting up at 4:45 so am doing that. At least getting to bed by 10 so could be worse.
So hit gym before swim today. Bit rushed by those sessions are often the best. Due to the lovely weather Hitler decided that in and out season has begun so that's what it was.
Following warm-up set was:
25 Max
25 easy
25 Max
25 easy
Then out of pool and
10x push-ups, ball slams, squats, dips and burpeesRinse and repeat for 50 minutes.
Destroyed
-
@rancid-schnitzel like turning up to the gym with a specific exercise in mind to kick off your workout, and then all the stations/machines/racks you could do it on are occupied...first world problems haha
-
Woken by that ginger cnut of cat at 3:45 when he brought a baby possum in. Ffs. Tried to sleep after that but was futile so went for a run before swimming. Good swimming session then another hour of intervals and various cardio. The human body is so retarded. Despite the crap sleep I absolutely smashed it today and that is often my experience. That makes no sense.
-
Up at 4:45 every day this week. Usually wake up around 4:30 and doze until the body and mind tell me to get tf out of bed. Going OK as long as I can get to bed early enough I guess.
Today I hit gym for back and tris and then pool for Hitler's session. Båstard chucked bear crawls in there this time. After 1 km of various swimming shit we then went:
25m Max, then
15 push-ups
15 squats
Bear crawls back to the other end of the pool
15 ball slams
15 dips
15 burpees
Then repeatManaged 6 of these before I had to leave to get son to school. Went OK actually. Not nearly as wrecked as GFs boot camp on Wednesday. That farking sled is a torture device 😳

Shit 12 days.
More of the same really although had 4 days up North which was much needed. There was a gym and pool at hotel so probably ended up being even more active.
But have decided to take a bit of action in terms of diet. It's clearly no longer in tune with the volume of training and that has to change. Going to get a body scan and then talk to a dietician.
Yesterday I absolutely hit the wall and started eating everything in sight. I'm obviously not maintaining any more and getting too lean and the body is not happy. Don't want to be that guy who has health problems because of a lifestyle that is too healthy!
Ultimately, I want to continue to exercise this much because I really enjoy it and it's important for me mentally. But that requires fuel and I've really dropped the ball on that one. So best to talk to an expert rather than muddle about myself.

I was always astonished when I read how much Michael Phelps ate but he was ripped to kingdom come. I think its ok to carb pre load provided you burn it off but it’s definitely about getting that balance completely right. It’s niggly when you don’t get that workout in and you can’t justify the big feed !

I'm half way through the 4 hour body diet and he talks about Phelps and his 12,000 calorie days. Says it's basically impossible to burn that so looked into it in greater depth.
It all comes down to thermal conductivity (TC) and the amount of additional energy that Phelps was using by exercising in the water. Because the TC in water is 26x what it is in air, you use 400% of what you would normally use. Basically the water literally sucks the heat/energy out of you.
I think given you swim so much, you might be vastly underestimating the level of calories you need.

Yeah, I think that's the definately the case. It's always been a common factor among swimmers and iron men competitors that they require stupid amounts of food to refuel. Nutrigrain is false advertising. It's only "Iron Man Food" insofar as only Iron Men can eat that sugary crap without becoming a fat arse.
I've been advised to use Dextrose in my protein shakes. Apparently it helps against low blood sugar. It's a common ingredient in certain beer apparently so will be interesting to see if it has an effect.

10km city run on Sunday. Managed 43 minutes, so pretty bloody stoked with that. Was a cool event. Should do more of these. Lucky to make the start though. Guts playing up before the start and it was a miracle I made it through the porter potty line in time. No pleasant but job done.

This week has gone stupid quick!
Had a mini cheat day yesterday which I was a bit ashamed about but think it was the best thing for the body. Had Covid jab on Monday and didn't let up on any exercise which probably wasn't smart but I'm not very smart.
Ginga cnut woke me at 4:30 this morning so I just got up. Good back and tris session at gym then a solid Hitler session:
50m Max
50m moderate
Then 30 seconds each of squats, dips, burpees, pushups and core.Says something about my swimming ability that I find the land exercises the "easy" part.
Good session and made me feel less guilty about the previous day's excesses.
