The madness of crowds.
Filled up the car today at our local, independent garage. Chatting to the owner, she told me they saw about a 200-300% increase in sales volume and about 400% in car numbers last week. They were never, ever short of fuel but got quite low.
Since Saturday, sales have plummeted to about 25% of normal and she's cancelled her regular delivery.....

Interesting stance from Boris these last couple of days.
Clear narrative to get people to try and solve their own problems. Be it logistical supply, lack of workers etc. With a very firm "we aren't going down the imported labour path".
I can see the point he's making & I do agree that it's long overdue that people start owning their own issues and not just blaming everything on the government. This follows on from Sunak's "teach a man to fish" budget. Too many people sat on their arses between 2016-2020 just assuming that all Brexit changes would be sorted by the government. Yes, Boris wanted this, yes, Boris campaigned for this but that doesn't make it his responsibility to deal with every single fallout from it.
But I'm not sure this is the right political strategy ...

It isn't a great strategy, but then again, there isn't a viable opposition right now so he can chance his arm.
People do need to become more self-sufficient. I tire of hearing ppl on TV and radio asking for more govt inquiries, more govt intervention, more govt bureaucracy, like it is the only idea open to them. most times govts get involved it ends up with poorly thought out solutions that cost exorbitant amounts of money.
The magic money tree isn't a viable solution, so ppl are going to have to think for themselves and find alternative answers to their problems. In the long run, it'll stimulate some new ideas and benefit society and hopefully result in the government and civil service shrinking and focusing on things that make a real difference to peoples lives.

There's another thread running thru BoJo's approach which is many firms have gone down the cheap imported labour for years and haven't done much to improve productivity or invest in training - and he's absolutely bang-on calling them out for it and telling them it has to change.
But, as you say, making it happen is going to be tricky and a very bumpy ride and offers a really big opportunity for Labour to tell voters they can be trusted more to deliver improved wages. But knowing Starmer and his lot, they'll spend more time criticising the colour of the net rather than put the ball in the back of it.

Agree, that was one of the selling points of Brexit to the voters, that there would be less migration and more jobs for locals. He's absolutely right to hold the line on this.

Veteran Conservative MP Sir David Amess was murdered today while holding a surgery in his constituency in Southsea, Essex.
May he rest in peace.
The Essex police have arrested a 25 year old man. Some news organisations are reporting he is a Somali national.

The police are not currently searching for anyone else in connection with the murder of Sir David Amess, but have searched two London addresses.
UK political parties have suspended all campaigning activities over the weekend out of respect for Sir David Amess. Security arrangements around Members of Parliament are being reviewed.

The Metropolitan Police have now declared the murder of Sir David Amess as a terrorist incident. This was a most vile assault on the deepest value of free, open societies.
It seems MP's have become easy targets for all that's wrong in today's society, and not just terrorists. And an interesting stat from the Daily Mail:
This is the experience of one MP:
Conservative MP Shailesh Vara tells Newsnight there is "a lot more" aggression coming from the public towards elected representatives in recent times. "The emails are a lot more hostile, the language is more aggressive," he says. Vara says he has spoken to some of those who send such messages and says they often think using aggressive language is not a problem.
You only have to watch or listen to the likes of Angela Rayner and her supporters to see that this doesn't just come from the public. It's also up to politicians and party members to dial down the rhetoric of what is essential hatred of people, as their views differ from yours.

Or their lifestyle, appearance, speech....
The FFIL is a pretty placid and sensible man but his staunch support of labour has led to him sharing some awful anti-conservative shit in the past. I might use this opportunity to see if I can press the message home about using inflammatory, hate filled messages...

I went on Twitter tonite for the first time in months. Fuck me, there's even sicker people out there than I remembered.
